Nissen-Hill hybrid soon, nervous about being in hospital

Been lurking here for a while. Pretty familiar with what to expect in regards to recovery, diet, and what the actual surgery entails. Done research for past year on this...but sadly enough, what I'm having panic attacks over is the staying in the hospital part. This is something I've never done before and up to this point the thought of getting so much as a flu shot would freak me out pretty bad. Does anyone have any advice for getting through the hospital part unscathed? From check in to discharge, I'm clueless. I just hope they let me take an Ativan on the day of...what should I bring? Now I'm worrying about that too. I'm a mess, but I know this procedure is necessary, and will be worthwhile in the end. I keep telling myself that.

LIZZ, I feel for you, its hard to stay calm I know its the fight or flight nervous system boiling in you. I completely understand, ask your doctor for Valium perhaps 5mg or 10mg it will calm your nerves better. Will be in my prayers tonight

Why are you having this surgery, do you have Barretts? I'd be nervous too. Why not get a "regular" Nissen?

No Barrets ...yet, but very close. This is the procedure my surgeon recommeded, to avoid slippage, reduce future hernia and need for re-operation in future-he says. They've done 3000 of them so I agreed to give it a shot. Anything would be better than what I'm suffering now. It's scheduled for December 23rd. Manometry next week, hooe I don't throw up on the nurse. *sigh*

Lizzy, Is Dr. Aye your doctor? I had my Hill done 8 years ago by Dr. Aye at Swedish. I don't know any other doctor doing the newer Hybrid except him.
I agree you should ask him for a relaxer pill if you are panicky about the hospital stay. Are you having it at Virginia Mason. It was great. I had no problems. Dr. Aye is a brilliant surgeon and you are going to be fine and feeling great in no time.
The only thing that I see is you will be having a "liquid Christmas dinner". BTW, my surgery is still working.

Yes! It is Dr. Aye! He's quite the celebrity it seems. Wow small world. It DOES wake me feel lots better to know of someone who had this exact one done before and came out ok-mine will be at Swedish first hill. Thank you!

Hi.

I don't check here much anymore, but I must share that I had an extremely bad outcome with my surgery. Many people do not, of course. But I feel obliged to share this. Second opinions are important.
