Hi Kay88
I am sorry you are experiencing this. I know it can be scary. You do not say how long you were on the PPI. There are a few things I would like to mention:
First, PPIs can make GERD worse for some people, because it can cause delayed gastric emptying (where food stays in the stomach too long). When this happens both food and the remaining acid will come back up the esophagus.
Second, some people can experience a withdrawal symptom from PPIs called "Acid rebound". Acid rebound is basically hyper-secretion of acid which can make GERD worse. Goggle: Acid rebound
Also, PPI's do not treat the problem which is causing the GERD. PPIs only treat symptoms and sometimes do not even do that well.
There are several things which can cause GERD such as: (Food sensitivities, H. pylori, hiatal hernia, delayed gastric emptying, and even Low stomach acid)... Low stomach acid can cause GERD due to food staying in the stomach too long. This will cause the food and remaining acid to come back up the esophagus. Google: low stomach acid
