I'm a GERD newbie, age 62, never anything worse than occasional heartburn over the years until a couple of months ago. During that time I've progressed from having intestinal bloat/discomfort (probably SIBO but not formally tested, just doctor's assumption) to increasingly frequent acid reflux and finally severe night-time reflux every night for the past few nights.
At primary care doctor's suggestion I had been taking Zantac, but when that started losing effectiveness I switched to Prilosec five days ago. That's when things started going nuclear. Second day in I had stomach bloating & sense of slow stomach emptying. That night I awoke to a feeling of fairly severe chills / shaking very much like low blood sugar symptoms, with normal/low body temperature. Got myself downstairs, drank some apple juice, felt better after 15-20 minutes. Over the past several days this has happened a few more times, most strongly triggered by episodes of reflux that wake me up--a few seconds after waking, the chills/shivering begin. Once or twice severe enough to be pretty scary. The constant night-time reflux had not occurred before I took Prilosec.
The afternoon shivering episode two days ago was severe enough that I nearly went to the E.R., and then did go yesterday, when feeling better, to see whether there were any serious underlying issues, but bloodwork & EKG both came back normal.
I discontinued the Prilosec day before yesterday, switched to an H2 blocker before bed, still had the nighttime reflux but not the shivers.
So I'm wondering whether this is most likely a (rare, looks like some after-market reports) side effect of Prilosec, or the coincidental result of GERD getting worse. If anyone out there has had a similar experience, with or without Prilosec (or other PPI), I'd appreciate hearing. In two days I'll be seeing my primary care doctor to discuss all this & expect to be referred to a GI specialist.
Meanwhile I need to decide whether to try Nexium starting tomorrow (ER doctor's Rx), or hold off to see where things go. Unfortunately the night-time reflux is bad enough that positional solutions are not controlling it--sleeping on left side w/wedge pillow, even sleeping upright, I'm getting reflux sufficient to wake me up.
