Going in for Nissen Reversal/Takedown Surgery

I'm going in to have my Nissen Takedown surgery next Tuesday 9/18/12. Why am I having this done or rather "undone"? I had the Nissen Fundoplication on 7/6/12 and have been miserable since. I'm now at just over 2 months out post Nissen and still have the following symptoms:

1. Pain behind breastbone
2. Sour taste in mouth, dry mouth and coated tongue
3. Difficulty swallowing
4. Nausea

After visiting with my surgeon at my last appointment, and literally breaking down and crying in front of him, he agreed to takedown the wrap completely.

Has anyone else had the reversal? What should I expect when I come out of surgery? The surgeon told me the stomach would be back to where it was prior to my initial Nissen. Sound right? He said it will basically be like a normal stomach. Does that mean I can eat whatever I want shortly after surgery? I do expect the normal post surgical swelling though don't expect the struggles I've had to this point.

I hope I'm not over reacting though I just can't imagine going on like this.

I am truly looking forward to having this undone! I'm counting the days. One week from tomorrow and no more wrap :)

I would love to hear others thoughts/comments/feedback etc.

Hi Mike,sorry to hear all the problems your having with the op.I too would like my nissen taken down,id mine done 7 months ago and have had constant problems,nausea,swallowing problems etc.Hopefully someone will be able to give you some reassurance on the reversal.Please keep posting to let us know how your getting on.Thanks and Good Luck! Mike, Did you ever get your fundoplication taken down? If so please could you let us know how it went. Also are you in the UK? I am just under 3 weeks post-op (Toupet). I did not enter into this surgery lightly. I took 2 years to decide on it but am very much regretting it as I am much worse off than before. At this stage my swallowing seems to be getting worse than the first few weeks and I am seriously bloated. Am also concerned re IBS. I feel like something is constantly in my throat and can't imagine living like this for the rest of my life. I am hoping to find a reputable surgeon who will be willing to safely take this down as I have made a massive mistake. I know it is early days but I also know this was a wrong decision. Hoping you see this post and can give some advice as I see it was 2012 when you posted. Thanks, Beth

Hello Beth/Mike,

Did any of you get your wrap taken down completely? How are you feeling now, any better? I also had a Nissen done in 2014 & have been feeling awful since then, so want a complete reversal. Any advice will be much appreciated.

My Name is Magaly, I have had the Fundoplication surgery almost 2 years ago! I think that was to worse decision I have ever made! I quote " I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SURGERY TO ANYONE". I that surgery I get pains behind my breastbone, it feels like someone is stepping on my chest. I also have difficulty swallowing and bad nausea, as you know that when you have the Fundoplication surgery you are unable to vomit. I live in Ohio. I found a surgeon who is going to reverse it. To tell you the truth I can't wait! The doctors said that it will be a blessing for me. I will keep you posted on the reversal. I have surgery in May 2016! I wish you guys who have the same problem of worse, the best in the future! Keep me posted on your decision. Have a wonderful day! Magaly

I hope you are well. I just wanted to know did you get your fundoplication reversed as we don't hear from anyone after they say they are planning on doing one may be because they may be happy after the procedure I suppose as happy people don't post much here only the ones with issues looking for solutions are common.

If you did do it, how are you feeling now, any better? Have your symptoms improved now after the reversal? Are you experiencing the reflux again? Sorry for so many Q's but I am planning to have mine undone soon and was just curious on the outcome.

Please do reply as your insight will really help me & others in the same situation.

I want my reversed. I am so angry because the doctor never told me I am getting the wrap during consultation. Just pulling the hernia down. When i woke up it was the worst feeling ever and i don't think i needed it at. I am premenopausal so alot of my symptoms with gator issues were caused by hormones. They didn't do a ph test either to make sure my LES is working. Just an upper Gi and seen some reflux. Funny thing is felt like crap after surgery and still do but when I started to take my hormones and vitamin d d or premenopausal issues my system started to get better. Please help. I need advise

See my Thread called robotic-assisted gastroesophageal valvuloplasty ... Essentially, a valve is created between the esophagus and stomach. The hiatal hernia is repaired with a Vicryl patch, which eventually disolves. We are all doing well. He does do a takedown of the fundo and the valvuloplasty.

Joined this forum to find out if anyone has had success in getting a Nissen Fundoplication takedown. I am scheduled for the surgery Dec 5th.
I had the Nissen done almost 19 years ago. Worse decision of my life. It wasn't too bad for the first three or four years, but after that I had trouble getting food, especially liquids, to pass into the stomach. I was going for endoscopies once a year to be dialated.
This past July things got worse, I am regurgitating and aspirating fluids while asleep waking up feeling like I was drowning. If I drink liquids too fast they come flying out because I feel like I have to burp. Now my doctor says I may have Achalasia but I think the wrap is too tight and it acts like Achalasia, along with my hiatal hernia which is at the base of my esophagus.
Long story short, I have loss 25 lbs in three months and need to do something. Just wondering if anyone has had success or failure with the takedown.

I believe there are two individuals who actually had the takedown surgery on the site, but there are about 500 members and they are all having problems.
