Hi all, here is my story.
I was a firefighter/EMT for 22 years, and had an unusual exposure to a flare at a vehicle accident that caused me to cough and have trouble breathing. I was seen at the hospital within a couple of hours, I was better and my lung functions came back normal for the few years after the incident. However, ever time I got a little cold it would settle in my chest and cause a dry cough. Right after I retired from the fire service, I had a coughing event and felt a rip under my sternum. Pretty sure I ripped my diaphragm. Within a couple of months, I had a fall off my horse, resulting in my arm being broken, but even more interesting that was the beginning of acid reflux for me. I believe my rip of my diaphragm did not create my hiatal hernia, but gave the pathway for my stomach to start its upward move into my esophagus, And my fall from the horse pushed my stomach up. I NEVER had acid like I have had until then with the exception of my pregnancy with my daughter 33 years prior. The horse accident happened 7 years ago. I had a colonoscopy 6 years ago and endoscopy at the same time where I was diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus. I have had every 6 months a endoscopy, and was told of my hernia. They have been monitoring everything and now I have mild dysphasia. It was decided I couldn’t have ablation until the Nissen flundoplication. My surgery is Feb. 7. I have had to have blood work, and today I did a barium swallow. It was really nothing, they used thin barium and it only took maybe 15-20 min. I will chronicle how this all goes, hopefully well! I do appreciate those who have posted before me, it has helped me be less nervous about
my upcoming surgery!
