stomach virus - now reflux??

Hi dbac; unfortunately, I had that same stomach virus in December and I'm intrigued by your note. I had a Nissen in July and felt pretty good until the virus hit. I managed to actually vomit once and it stopped that part of it; but the pain from that lasted for days. I had what felt like a knot at the LES for two or three days. Since that time I have become more and more symptomatic; I have heartburn all the time, my protonix usage is increasing to 2 times a day from once a day..at least a couple of days a week.. because of the heartburn. I also have chest pain again as well as hoarseness.

I had a barium swallow to see if I had damaged the wrap and it appears intact, but there is a significant change in the motility and esophageal emptying since the post op swallow in September. Because of this and the fact that I am not just symptomatic, but increasingly so, I'm heading back to Cleveland for a round of testing and Dr. appts. to see what has happened.

You're the first person that I've heard of who has some of the same symptoms as I do and following the virus as well. I wish I understood what happened!

I understand exactly what you are saying. I still get some cramps in various parts of my stomach area that I never had before, I woke up today and the bump in my throat does not appear to be there. I took prilosec last night before bed. Just very odd that both people in my family have the same symptoms. I have heard it may take 2 weeks to fully go away all the efefcts from this virus.

stkitt can you explain this better (emesis and the regurge ) not sure what this means.

Last question on  this.  Since my wife and I have both had this, we both seem to be full of gas. Her's is coming out the top, mine the bottom. (I am sure you know what I mean). It is awful. Her stomach is really bloated also. We both are feeling better except for all the gas. Has anyone else experienced this?

i wasn't sure if i should create a new post or revive this one. i just signed up for a membership on this site because of this post.

my daughter who is 5 got the tummy flu on april 2nd. she threw up twice and slept most of the the next day. within a couple days she started having GERD like symptoms everyday- heartburn/chest pains, burping throughout the day, tummy pain. it was a couple times a day but then she got a second tummy flu this past monday the 25th. since then she is burping and having chest pains after everything she eats. i am being told by our nurse partitioner that it's just the tummy flu working its way through but i am not sure if that is the case. she burps all day now, gets chest pains (heartburn) and we have been eating the brat diet all week so she is living on apple sauce, crackers, bananas and rice. today she ate probably 500 calories worth of food and she is getting skinny! tonight she was afraid to eat because she didn't want her chest or tummy to hurt :(

i am reading online a lot of accounts of people having the tummy flu and then getting GERD symptoms afterwards that lasts for days, weeks sometimes months. what is this? is this even a real natural bug or is this a genetically modified one!?! i am at my wits end. we are doing an ultra sound in a week- soonest they could get us in. the other tests sound so invasive and many of the post-flu GERD people online say they did all the tests and everything came back fine

we are doing digestive enzymes, heartburn tablets, just tried slippery elm. we do homeopathics. i need help! my child is suffering and so am i. she is fine and full of energy and playful when she is not having the chest or tummy pains but when she does have them she lays on the couch sitting up and looks miserable. she keeps asking when she will get better. we are now on day 7 of the 2nd tummy bug and it's been a month since the first one. if anyone can help me or point me in the right direction or have info about their own journey with this same experience i am all ears.

thank you for your response sharon! we have been to two doctors! we are being told she does not need to go to the emergency room- that's is digestive distress post flu and that it needs to work it's way out of her system

the good news is this morning she has had probiotic, apple sauce and rice with no pains- so i am going to watch her today. but this happened yesterday she was good in the morning and then later in the day she had pains

just to be clear her chest pains are HEARTBURN- not heart pain. we had her heart checked a few times now and all is clear.

when i read about GERD all the stuff she is going through are what GERD symptoms are- burps, chestpain/heartburn, tummy pain, etc... she doesn't have asthma though. i have read a lot of accounts online of people who got full on GERD post flu and that it went away on it's own- which is what this feels like. but i want it to go away NOW.

if she gets pains again today i am going to call another pediatrician in town and see if they can see her and get us a sooner ultrasound that is covered by our insurance (if not covered it's 900!). the one on monday the 9th is covered :(

I wouldn't do anything before your appointment on Friday. It could be gastritis which is an inflammation of the stomach lining, and it causes a lot of the same symptoms. I would wait and see what the EGD shows on Friday. I would try introducing foods like oatmeal, yogurt, jello, but stay away from caffeine (coffee and tea), citrus, carbonation, chocolate, etc. It may take a couple of weeks to go away, and depending on the results of your endoscopy he may prescribe medication. Let us know how your testing goes.
