Long term safety of ppis

Hi all..

Its heard that long term PPI use causes kidney damage..
I'm very anxious as I will have to use them for long..

Are there people who have used them for long? ..what are the side effects you have experienced?..
Any reply is appreciated..

Hi, I'm pretty new to the PPI stuff but my niece who has gastritis has been on Nexium for over 20 years and she seems to be O.K. She's a retired nurse so I think she would have done the research.

Then ppis won't have the same effect on all users I think..internet tells abt a new study which associates them with kidney problems..

How often is she taking nexium?? Once a day or twice??

A lot of drugs can be a problem with the liver or kidney. I'm on Azathioprine for Crohn's and I have blood tests every 3 months to check my liver functions. Unfortunately all drugs have side effects and not everyone has the same issues. The internet can be a bit scary when looking up info about illnesses and drugs. I try to stick to the Mayo Clinic site hoping that they are more informed than other sites.

As far a I know my niece is on 1 pill a day but when she has really bad days she also takes Pepto Bismal. And I redid the math and she's been on them for more than 30 years but I can check with her and get back to you about the exact length of time.

Before I had surgery, I was on some type of PPI for over 30 years. To this day, I don't have any medical issues related to them. I currently take absolutely no prescriptive medications and I am 57 years old.

Thank you mtb and Sharonz for spending time to reply me..I'm 34 years female from India..I have anxiety and I feel relief and support on this forum when elder people like you respond to me..thank you again..

I will tell you with complete honesty that you just feel lighter and better off of PPI's. Whenever I've been off of them (I am now), I did a ton more jogging/running/etc.

They can also lead to osteoporosis. My GI doc was adamant that they now know long term use is not preferred. But if that is the only thing that helps, well, you gotta do what you gotta do.
