I can’t say for sure that mine was caused by antibiotics but yes, I suspect them.
I think my case is different from what a lot of people here generally have. I started out with jaw pain and tongue burning. I actually had a back tooth pulled because I thought that was causing the pain (dentist wanted to do a root canal but I just wanted the dang thing out of there.)
Fast forward 6 months and I was just going crazy. Constant mouth burning, ENT checked me and said I had bad oral hygiene (totally debunked by my dentist who now practically hides when he sees me coming because I had been back to him so many times). I saw so many doctors with no answers. My research online basically lead me to think I had burning mouth syndrome.
My GP finally says go see your GI doc. I thought no, what could my stomach have to do with it? I had had ulcers in the past from NSAIDs but that was years ago and I don’t use those anymore and I did NOT have any heartburn.
I finally decided to go to my GI doc anyway. I was about a year away from needing my colonoscopy (serious family history) so I told him I had some stomach pain and this burning in my mouth so he decided to do endoscopy along with colonoscopy. Morning of procedure I was puking up the colonoscopy prep right on the operating table. He wanted to skip endo and I begged him NO, please, I need to know if something going on there.
Well, I had ulcers again plus a small hernia. I was so sure it was the ulcers and that the PPIs would just take care of everything. Yeah, not so much. So he finally suggested a hernia repair with TIF.
By this time I could actually feel the bubbles coming up my throat (for several months it was just pain and burning in my mouth). Keeping in mind that it was 7 months from the time I called my GI to finally getting into surgery, I was so beside myself that I had been researching psych wards, it was THAT bad.
I will be 7 weeks post op on Monday. Not gonna lie, it’s been hellish. I am still on liquids, when I try anything remotely even just soft, it’s awful. Mostly horrible nausea still but also still these dang bubbles coming up my throat. By mid afternoon the bubbles are sticky in my mouth, my lips stick together and I have a glob in my throat and parts of my tongue and gums burn. Super dizzy and that I thought was from lack of food. Now I realize I only get dizzy when I eat.
I had 2 surgeons. Saw them both within the last week. One gave me elavil (which works great for some but to me should be called Evil) and lido patches, those helped the stomach pain. Second surgeon gave me zofran, which I normally love, but it gave me a migraine so I had to stop. Could not risk throwing up. Started on Pepto. Not perfect but a huge help.
I got a kenalog shot from my Rheum doc yesterday, after getting permission from surgeon who said it would actually be a really good idea. Wow, what a difference!!
So, eating less, sticking to liquid food and less of it, Pepto and kenalog short has all helped me feel so much better in just 24 hours. Still have bad diarrhea, hope the Pepto might start to help that.
But to your original question, if you are even still reading lol, YES, I believe that all the antibiotics I was on for an infection it took them forever to find (UTI) is what caused the ulcers. The hiatal hernia seems to just run in my family. GI doc wants me to try to heal for 6 more weeks and if still having problems I will need another endoscopy. Today is the most optimistic I have been since my first few weeks of surgery. For me, things got way worse before they started to improve.
