Bad bitter acid taste after Nissen

Hello all, I just had my Nissen Fundloplication July 10, 2018, so that makes me little shy of 4 weeks post op. as of last week I started getting the bad bitter acid taste back in my mouth and will not go away, is this normal, has anyone else experienced this?


Saw my Dr. for follow up on July 30 and they said could be me still healing or I stopped my PPI's (Dexilant) too soon. Told me try Zantac first and that doesn't help, then back to the dexilant, and I am back to dexilant. Someone please tell me this is normal and will go away or if you had any similar experience. Also if you have any advice, let me hear it.

Since you were recently seen by the dr, I would think about what he said. It sounds like you stopped the Dexilant too soon. Keep in mind healing from this surgery takes months & months, not weeks.

This forum tends to run slow, you just need to keep checking back. Also, if you look through the posts here about this surgery, you can probably get lots of good information.

They kept me on prescription PPI's for 6 weeks. Just surprised you're off them already. No acid taste here...

I wouldn't worry just yet; worrying can give you heartburn. ^^ ha..

hi dnestorjr yes I experience this the 1st week after my surgey a bad taste in my mouth I was chewing gum like crazy for the 1st six months later I am chewing less gum these days ... I am still trying foods I have not had in a year and three months now so am still a work in progress when it come to my taste buds... I started drinking my diet Pepsi after six months after my surgery but I have to drink it with lime now because of my taste buds have changed.. The great benefit of my surgery I drop 26 pounds in the 1st six months and join a gym after been away from the gym 10 years ago... some point you need to come off the medication I taking it my be interfering with your healing process it will take about a year before you feel some kind of normal life after the surgery if you have read other blogs on this site everyone recovery is different I was in and out of the hospital within 24 hours... I have read some people its taking more time for there recovery and after I was clear after my six months I eat very different now since my surgery making smaller meal portion then what I use to cook for myself... you have to give it time this is a long process like I said six months to a year are more just depends on your own body take care will be looking forward to your reply

ok i'm now 5 1/2 weeks post op, still on Dexilant, this morning woke up choking on acid like before surgery and still have horrible acidic taste in my mouth, like before surgery, is this normal?

Everyone's recovery is different, keep taking the Dexilant, and give yourself some time. Are you still following your post-op diet?

i'm still doing what Dr said, no bread, she let me try red sauce last week no problems, other than that, diet still same. I'm having terrible heart burn sensation today, lot of pain. thought i was beyond this

Been doing some reading, is it possible everything is still swollen this far along and how long does the swelling usually last?

The peak swelling period usually causes difficulty swallowing and some pain, generally not reflux symptoms. Although you are very early in your recovery, so anything is possible. I would continue with a soft/sloppy diet, and see if some of the symptoms subside. It took me just about 6 months to really start feeling better, and almost a year until I felt like the "new" me.

There's no way for me to tell you if your symptoms are normal, or not - I personally did not suffer from reflux post surgery. If you think that the Dexilant isn't working, you should follow up again with your surgeon.

Just an update, still taking dexilant and I did what SharonZ has recommended, going back to soft diet for a bit, and I am feeling much better, my advice is if you are still refluxing post op, you maybe trying to advance your diet too soon, listen to your body, I will keep you all posted and again thanks all for your input and help.

Ive had hiatal hernia repair and Linx inserted.....I too, since day three after surgery, have the bitter acid taste back flowing steadily up into my mouth....my doc says its not acid but secretions with the repair healing.....hope he's right....
been 19 days since the procedures and its been brutal healing....see my thread 'its been brutal' under this topic....
hope we both get rid of disgusting stuff which makes me more nauseous than before with a stomach ache on and off...
think its gonna be a long recovery like months or a year, ugh....

OK it has been since July 10, 2018 when I had my wrap done, its now coming up on 5 months and all my symptoms are back just the same and I am on the same meds, just did barium swallow test and said I am still re-fluxing but surgery is still in tact, so I requested an EGD which will be on Dec. 7, anyone have issues or symptoms this long post op? Am I dealing with a failed procedure? Thanks

How are you holding up? I had a wrap done a year ago and still had acid reflux. I had the wrap re-done yesterday and have the same bitter taste in my mouth. Just wanted to see how you’re holding up since your experience sounds similar to mine.

I had a hiatal hernia that was fixed during the first surgery but somehow returned afterwards. That’s the reason that I *might* have had symptoms. Will see how it goes.

I was just curious. It's not that common to have a redo so soon after the first surgery. Some people do benefit from continuing to take PPIs temporarily after surgery.

That would definitely be me. So far I have to stay on PPI’s or else I’ll get heartburn. Maybe someday I can gradually wean off of them.

Did you have a full or a partial/floppy Nissen? Did the same surgeon do the second surgery?
