Question about Haitel Hernia and PPI.

about 10 years ago I started feeling acid reflux symptoms. I had a scope done and was diagnosed with a small Haitel hernia. My doctor prescribed protonix(20mg) daily which works amazing. I can usually get by with every other day but by the third or forth day if I don't take protonix the acid reflux starts. It usually hits me in the afternoon. I tried diets(no sugar, gluten, coffee but it doesn't seem to make a difference. With the long term risks I would like to get off these permanently. Since a haitel hernia is more of a mechanical defect is there a path to getting off PPI aside from surgery? Anyone have luck with Chiropractor, stretches or natural treatments?

That's a personal decision, but I don't see where any of your suggestions would give you long-term relief. I would follow a strict GERD-type diet, and try taking something like Pepcid at bedtime. Usually PPIs aren't meant to be taken as needed, and that's probably why when you don't take them consistently they lose their effectiveness. Honestly, with a small hernia, I would treat surgery as a last resort.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will definitely talk to my doctor to see what my options are. Perhaps another scope would help determine if the hernia has gotten worse.

PPI's are meant to be taken consistently each day for the duration of treatment.

If your hernia is less than 3 cm, you could also ask about TIF (transoral incisionless fundoplication). It's a minimally invasive procedure usually done on an outpatient basis that would both reduce the hernia and reinforce the valve.

Thanks for the information. I will look into it.I realize ppi medication should be taken every day but My goal is to get off of ppi if possible.
