Papaya extract has improved my GERD symptoms so that they are almost completely gone! I went through a very, very bad period where I could not lay down for more than 2 hours without suffering terribly.   The acid reflux would make me cough very hard.   I coughed so hard that I almost passed out.   The acid went into my upper airways.   I was also very short of breath.   Part of my problems is COPD.   I took Nexium twice a day and Reglan at night.   I went through a bottle of Gaviscon about every 5 days.   I raised the head of my bed about 6 inches.   I even got an appointment to see a specialist at the University of Florida (SHANDS) hospital for a surgical consultation.   I still had symptoms that were almost unbearable. Papaya extract has eliminated these symptoms completely.   These are chewable tabs.   I take 2 when I get up in the morning, 2 more after each meal and 2 more just before bed.   It’s WONDERFUL! Should I keep the appointment for a surgical consultation?

How does papaya extract work. And how does it reduced acidity. I tried it once, but for some reason I got acidic, maybe it was just something I ate. Can you shed some ligh on this? Thanks.

Well, am I surprized.  I thought it was papaya extract, but instead it is papaya enzyme.  One ingredient is Papain, another is papaya fruit.  I stand by everything else I said.  It is GREAT!

I've been taking it too, but only occasionally when I feel a little bit too full after a meal. They have helped me a lot. I noticed one type I bought has calcium carbonate in it. I stopped using those because I'm afraid it's going to neutralize my stomach acid. Papaya works a lot better for me than Tums ever did and I've eaten a lot of those over the years. :-)

Interesting.  Is there more than one brand of papaya enzymes?

There are a lot of different brands. It gets confusing. I went online and looked up a few and their ingredients. A lot of them contain calcium carbonate.

To teaman and nikib5, which papaya enzyme brand works the best???

I don't know which brand is the best because I've tried two and they both worked fine. I'm currently using one from GNC.

A couple years ago I started taking some kind of papya enzyme, I felt really good while taking them. But then I ran out, and I haven't been able to find them since, I think the company stopped making the kind I took.

Thanks for reminding me about papaya again, I should just try a differet brand of them sometime. :)
