Hi

Can someone tell me what the difference in symptoms are between GERD and NERD apart from the obvious non errosive part, its just that i have all the classic symptoms like sometimes burning behind sternum,i get the tight throat/lump in throat feeling etc etc but i dont seem to be troubled with it at all at night,i am never awakened with food or acid refluxing into my throat/mouth even if i go to bed and have eaten not long before. This has made me wonder if i might have NERD as opposed to GERD, i could google the difference but we all know what happens when we google,i would come up with something much worse, i have date for endoscopy in July had to postpone earlier one as will be on holiday,would be grateful if anyone had any comments.

Ps for those who dont know me i also suffer from health anxiety (which is a bit of a bummer when you are a nurse)so i am already worried that ihave something more severe ie oesophageal/gastric ca. thanks guys.

Dear Nell,

I sometimes have the burning, lump in throat, ect.  But I dont have trouble when I am sleeping.  I just had an endoscope done and the doc said I have GERD.  I never had this until I started taking medicine for high blood pressure.

I guess you could say I also have health anxiety since I think something else is wrong with me all the time. This probably didn't help since I dont know the difference between Gerd and Nerd?

You guys are like me exactly I am the worst hypochrondiac spelling) that there is. I too get the pain in chest, ears and arm during the day, but no issues (knock on wood) at night. Nell I take it by your user name you were born in 1965 and so was I.

I too like Lat though don't know what NERD is. Could you please explain.

Nell and Skooby,

I've been looking into the GERD/NERD thing. They have the same symptoms, but NERD is non-erosive esophagus and GERD is erosive esophagus. I guess NERD can turn into GERD if untreated. I have never heard of NERD until now. Thanks Nell it was interesting looking it up. I'm also interested in the yeast connection. I don't quite understand why I haven't heard any of my docs say any of these things.

Its all a bit of a minefield i think. Laurie how bad were your symptoms, i have just got myself so convinced that i have something more sinister and of course with this condition the more you worry the worse your symptoms get. I did know that there was no errosions with NERD but i just wondered if there was anything else that seperated the two, i had been given a date for a scope which was 3 days before i was due to go on a big holiday to florida ( i live in Scotland) and i was so afraid that the scope would show something bad and that the holiday thatwe have all looked so forward to would be wasted, so i figured that another few weeks wouldnt make much of a difference , when i contacted the endoscopy suite to explain they were very good and have given me a date for the week after i come back so at least we will all have had our holiday and i can face whatever i have to then. Skooby yes i was born in 1965 and i am now 41 (everything went down hill when i hit 40,so much for life starting then. Hope to get some more feedback from you guys.

I had/have chest pain, which I always panic and think it is my heart. I feel like something is in my throat. I have pain in my arms, alot in my left arm. Sometimes from my elbow down it feels numb. I have pain in the center of my back. I feel like I am full of air alot. Terrible taste in my mouth. Since I had my scope the doctor has switched me to aciphex from nexium and it seems to work alot better. I only have like twinges of pain in my chest and back, but my arm still hurts. I have sleep apnea also. I am 41 soon to be 42. I seems everything went down hill when I turned 41. Now I can't ever seem to relax. I guess you can't expect any guarantees, I would sure like one though.

Don't worry about the scope. (easy for me to say right) I don't remember any of it. It took 20 minutes and it was over. All they found was mild redness where my stomach and eshophgus meet. You are up and back to normal activity the same day. Before the scope I was convinced that I had cancer, and would have a heart attack on the table. At least I would be at a hospital lol. But that is me. I tell the doctors how much anxiety I have, but no one seems to care.

Have fun on your holiday to Florida. Welcome to the US. I live in Indiana.

the scope is a breeze, i've had quite a few. only remember the first one, it was done over ten years ago. they've gotten alot better since then.

you get nothing to eat or drink starting at midnight the night before the scope. bring a driver. the driver also helps you to remember what the doctor has to say after the scope is done. most likely you'll be a little out of it for a little while after the scoping is finished. years ago, they gave enough sedation to last for hours afterward. this last one i had done, which was about three weeks ago, i could have driven myself home, but i done remember a thing from the actual procedure. oh and the pretty picture you get to have for a Souvenir . :) (it wasn't pretty in my case....lol)

really looking forward to the holiday,and ive just gotta keep my fingers crossed that it is reflux thats the problem, i get so full of wind since started taking the ppi sometimes its really quite painful till i get rid of it, lol then its painful for those around me. Im not really worried about the scope, just what they will find but i have got to go through with it, no point in running away from it.
Know what you mean about the anxiety,it is horrible to suffer fromit especially when some people dont understand,my problems with the reflux really got out of control once i started on the anti depressant.

Have fun on your holiday Nell. Try to relax.

Let us know how your scope goes. Medicine seems to be a weird thing. You need it for some things and it disrupts other things.
