I'm curious who else has chest pain and if this is definitely a result of reflux.  I have this basically on a daily basis--the sensation of a golf ball in the middle of the chest.  Of course, this makes me very anxious, even though I realize it's not my heart.  I also have occasional sporadic pain both up and down the rib cage and also at the very top of the abdomen that I have to think are attributable to GERD.  This pain is always dull and never quite in the same place.

I was originally diagnosed with chronic gastritis from bile reflux, and have been on carafate regularly.  Generally my stomach feels ok, it's the constant chest/rib pain that bothers me most of all.

I have been referred to a surgeon in NYC who specializes in the Stretta Procedure....

the nissen is better than stretta as far as percentages goes..i have anxiety and gerd not alone there not sure how much of my problems are anxiety and gerd but anxiety has me going for ssd..i cant function from anxiety..gerd and your head have a definite connection..

about the pain in the ribs and chest,i can relate and have posted so much on this on various websites..my ribs breatbone tender to the touch..i have an erosion found on my last egd and it showed that..maybe why im getting a stining pain..anyways seems like its gerd or chronoditis..hang in there scary but..probally gerd..

I get chest pains that mimic heart attacks 3-4 days after a very stressful time. The pain hits in the middle of a major acid attack. I went to an Endo and a Heart doctor. After a battery of heart tests, monitoring, etc. it was determined that my symptoms were related to Gastritis and GERD. An Endoscope confirmed it.

How did the egd confirm that was there an erosion or damage only way to confirm Gerd is from that..

Another question:  is the pain caused by gastritis or by GERD itself?  I tend to think that gastritis would not present in the form of chest pain.  Any ideas?

It could be referred pain. I experienced that tenderness during my episodes of dyspepsia in a recent trip. I was eating too much, and the excess carbs made my stomach inflate and hurt. My digestion all but stopped, and I had a horrible amount of gas. The tenderness stayed for three days.

Reflux is definitely associated with chest pain. Pressure on the vagal nerve will cause it, along with heart irregularities and anxiety. It really sucks! Sabres, is your medication really working for you? It could be you're taking too low of a ose or the wrong one altogether. It happened to me.

Bekster, thanks for writing. I found the PPI's to be counter-productive since acid is the stomach's only defense against bile injury. Carafate helps my stomach generally feel all right, but the reflux continues.

I got a script for Zantax (spelling???) which is a h2 blocker. This is recommended for a bleeding ulcer. My pain is right around my breast bone. I had three gastric spasms and they are painful, fast and furious and come on you completely from outer space.

I have had chest pain from GERD and erosive esophagitis since January. Didn't see a doctor until I got really ill in April with pneumonia.

The only thing that would stop my chest pain was the Lortabs pain meds I have for fibromyalgia. Nothing else would help and I have been on Reglan since 1990 for gastroparesis.

Of course the chest pain would happen after I was laying down after I ate. So I figured that out pretty quickly and as time goes on, I don't seem to get that chest pain as badly as I did just 2 months ago.

I have also been on a GERD diet too. I realize certain foods set me to pain also.

Hi all:

My chest pains were the first thing that sent me to my doctor. After "ruling out" any heart or circulatory problems, I underwent the endoscopy (just yesterday, as a matter of fact). They told me I had GERD and gastritis. I have also had some pretty severe anxiety in recent months-- it's interesting how those three things go hand in hand (anxiety, GERD, and chest pain).

I am goiong to have one omre test done next Monday-- a HIDA scan of my gall bladder. I guess there is a relationship with that, as well, although I am not sure what it is yet.

I am not sure how all of this is going to be treated, but to redirect my post back to Sabres-- I can attest that chest pain can accomplany reflux, but at this time I cannot say for sure if the reflux is always or necessarily the cause of the chest pain. Good luck to you. As I learn more, I'll pass it along.
