How Long to Barrett s

Hi all,

I am 31 years old and a 14 year sufferer of GERD. I have tried everything including all PPI, OTC pepcid, zantac and Maalox in different combinations and nothing seems to help. Also, no carbonated drinks, spicy foods, choclates, smoking, alcohol and also lost 16 pounds in last 2 months. Still getting worse with almost daily heartburn....
I have been reading about Barretts and cancer related to it. My last endoscopy was 5 years ago with much inflammation in it. With all these daily heartburn with no medical response, does anyone know what is the risk of Barretts and is it useful getting any surgery done.

I think you are way overdue for an endoscopy to be done to see just how much damage you have.

If you can't take the PPI's then it would be up to the surgeon and you to decide if surgery would be the best route for you.

Personally, I couldn't stand not being on a PPI and I'm still having problems even after 4 months of being on Nexium. I'm having side effects and the worst one is edema in my feet/legs/hands and constipation.

If you don't mind me asking, how do you stand the pain, unless you aren't getting any? I get horrible chest pain from the heartburn.

I think I just have learned to suffer with the pain and discomfort as nothing I do ever seems to work. I have seen multiple Gastroenterologists and no one has anything different to say. My last doc 5 years ago told me that I did not need any further endoscopies. But now reading about Barrett has got me somewhat scared. I Think I am gonna get one soon. thanks for the advice.

I would definatley find a doctor that will give you an endoscopy. I had one done last month after suffering from heartburn for FAR less time than you have and I was dx'd with Barretts!

Hi Mike and everyone else...
I've been wondering about Barrett's too. I've been having reflux for over 8 years and it's been really bad for past year. I've tried all the meds Prilo, Previced, Nexium, Carafate, currentlly on Acidphex, have comsumed mass quantatites of Tagament and OTC drugs and some work or seem to offer relief for a little bit, and others seem to do nothing. I've given up caffeinine, alcohol, chocolate, very little sugar, and hardly any processed food :(, I am very fit and into exercise. I tried one homeopath whose remedies seemed to help a bit for awhile, I'm starting with a different one on Monday to see if that might help. I am awake at 5.30 EST and have been for several hours because my throat is on FIRE! And this has been going on for over 3 weeks straight, every night (so I'm exhausted during day) and my throat is always sore. I've had two endoscopies, last one in June of 05, and I was told that I didn't show any damage yet, but I'm worried because this year my symptoms have been so bad. I found this bullletin board and am starting to use my sleepless night to explore some of the tips and thoughts shared here.
