Hi all, my name is Shannon and I have been a heartburn sufferer on and off for 20+ years. I have been on Prevacid, Nexium and Prilosec. All have worked well.

Recently, I began experiencing the familiar heartburn symptoms after I eat. This time, however, a new one creeped up! I have what I can only describe as a "cooling" sensation in the back of my throat. Almost like a swallowed a mint. Is this a symptom of GERD?

Hi and welcome to HW... I am glad you found us..  I am sorry to hear you are still having problems..  I dont know if that is a symptom or not.. Everyone can have different symptoms.. It all depends... Sorry I can not help more.. I would talk to my dr if I were you and let them know what is going on..

Thank you for your response. I have been skimming through the posts and I do see many people with burning throat. I would describe my symptoms like that as well. I hate it because the PPI doesn't take away the burning in my throat.

I'm new here, too, and I get the same cool sensation in my throat that you described. I'm going to assume it's the acid backing up into the throat. It seems to come and go depending on how the stomach is.

This is my main symptom. Mine is everyday all the time. It's isoloted in the back of throat and sometimes it goes to my throat. I have tried many remedies, all meds, over the counter drugs, nothing makes it go away. My doctors think i'm crazy and I need anti-depressants.  My next step is to resolve the situation with correcting my ph balance. I bought ph test strips and my acid level is definetly off  and i'm going to try a akaline diet.

If you come across anything that helps you please let me know.

I'm experiencing the same sensation...like a burning in my throat...sometimes it feels like a lump in my throat. If we are taking the PPI's, how can the acid be coming up?

Sometimes, even the sides of my tongue burn and the tip of my tongue burns...maybe this is rebound pain...I know it's annoying....I'm throwing up my hands in frustration most of the time.

We really should find another way to communicate with eachother. We have the same exact symptoms. The side of my tongue burns all the time, especially when I try to lay down. It's very annoying and frustrating. I bought the ph akaline strips to test my ph balance and found that I am not in the normal range. I have been thru all meds, prescribed and over the counter, none of them worked. I am now in the vitamin stage and will start changing my diet. WIth the advice of some of the others here, I purchased licorice root and digestive enzymes today. I live in New York and would really like to talk to you or email, if you would consider it.

I have that same thing. I feel a cool feeling in the back of my throat, like I swallowed a mint. I asked my GI about that and he said he had never heard of anything like that. Nexium helps my stomach, but the minty feeling is always there. Only relief I get is if I brush my teeth.

I had a burning tounge as well a while back. It dissapeared all by itself, an my gums and the roof of my mouth were swollen at the same time.

Yes, we can email but I'm afraid to give it out because you know what might happen.  I also started taking the digestive enzymes yesterday.  The licorice gives me a headache but I think it works pretty good. 

Yesterday my tongue burned so bad I finally had to take a pain killer or I thought I would go nuts.  Today it seems better.  I'm taking the Aciphex 20mg a day but I don't think it's enough.  Does anybody take 40 mg a day? 

You know what scares me also is that the doctors think we are all crazy with these symptoms...it's so hard to talk to them about anything.  All they want to do shut you up with anti-depressants. 

It's so comforting to know that others are having the same symptoms.

I've edited my profile you can click on the envelope to start emailing me. I know about those bad days. My GI, suppposedly one of the TOP TEN in New York wanted only to give me antidepressents. I refused. My doctors actually told me they never heard of such a symptom. Well, I have taken different avenues, I also started taking the licorice. Today, I had a pretty ok day. No burning, not much acidity in the mouth. I've also started digestive enzymes and I take a PH balance test a couple times a day. You should buy this kit, it's only 7.99. Email me when you have the chance.

I lurk here a little and have reflux and pain in esophagus, occasional burning in mouth and lips-and what I only think of as tasteless fumes.
When I first started getting symptoms I describe this very same cooling feeling in my mouth like having eaten a mint and the docs had no idea what I was talking about--I'm glad to finally hear that someone has had this symptom to--it was hard for me to believe that I couldn't explain it any different, that was it exactly, and frustrating that they couldn't 'get' it.

whiskeygirl---I had that symptom for months and months and months before I finally swithched docs to my old doc (from before I moved here from another city). He figured it out on the first visit and gave me ranididine (sp?) and that cleared it up in three days. UNFORTUNATELY he didn't give me instructions to continue taking the meds past that perscription. Thinking I was cured of reflux, I didn't know anything about it then, it came back with a vengence and the minty coolness was replaced by the fumes alone that basically burned everything in my mouth and lips including my lungs. So the minty thing has never returned to me -thank god!--after my first treatment. It would surely drive me crazy, I feel for yous guys. Haven't got the foggiest idea what would have caused it either.

I get this too!  That awful sensation in the throat!  The lump, the burning, etc.

The past three days I have woken up totally naseous and vomitted foamy looking stuff.

That nasty taste in my mouth is making me crazy!

Today it is taking much longer to get over the naseau (sp?).  I need to get over it soon so I can take my other meds - which need food!

I know how you feel. I hate this too!, Mine is getting a little better during the day  - I have tried a couple of different things. More bananas in my diet. I'm trying Zantac. Therapy to help with the stress.  I suggest you do what I'm doing, buy the ph balance strips and test your saliva. I believe if you are in a unhealthy range it has a lot to do with food and stress.

Mine seems to come and go... I can never tell what days are going to be worse. I am wondering tho, if any of you have a white tounge. (not fungus) Mine is white in the morning and I have a bad taste in my mouth as well. It gets better during the day. I am also having wierd pains in my throat, or should I say my upper thoat, right under my jaw. Anyone else have any of these symptoms with the minty taste?

Alot of us have that minty taste, it's hard to get rid of. I'm trying zantac now.  I don't get the white tongue at all. Just the minty taste, which I think is acid coming back up. It hits the back of my tongue and burns, gets worse when i lay down at nite. I really do believe that stress plays a big part in it. I know that when I'm really busy, having brunch with a friend, keeping busy all day. It's not there.  Again, I think it's part stress and part diet.

Hi,

I have been have similar symptoms with fumes in my throat, burning tongue and a weird minty taste in the back of my throat. I went to 2 doctors, one prescribed medication for acid reflux (which made me feel really bad because my stomach never really hurt in the first place) and also allergy medication. I also had an endoscopy and found that my stomach is fine, just a little irritated, probably from the medication!
Since the doctors were puzzled, I was really at a loss of what to do. I realized that I started having these symptoms around the same time I switched toothpaste--- By any chance do you use Tom's of Maine Spearmint toothpaste? I have since stopped using it and my tongue had got much better and the minty feeling is going away, too. It definitely is not completely gone but BETTER. But it sort of makes sense--a weird minty feeling in my throat and tongue but not really in my stomach. AND I was brushing my teeth constantly to get rid of the sensation, duh. I hope this helps someone with similar troubles.

I was using a minty toothpaste about a year ago, and I stopped using it along time ago. I was doing the same thing, brushing and rinsing just to get rid of that feeling. Lately, I've just had a bad taste and not so much of a minty taste. I don't know which is better. What I don't get is why these doctors are so unknowledgeable about this?

Grrrrrr. That feeling in the throat is so annoying. Sometime it worries me that it's going to do permanent damage. Maybe it is the toothpaste. The most annoying part is not knowing the exact cause of it. For me it's on the right side. Sometimes I feel as though it could be all in my mind. Maybe it's some kind of infection. (viral, fungal, bacterial.) I'll try swithching toothpastes, tell you guys what I think. Definetly stress is a factor. Its weird cause the more I think about it or have time to think about it, it becomes worse. Grrrrrr. It seems the right side too. Weird.

I  have a new toothpaste without a minty taste and is still very good. It's called Forever Bright and there is a website, www.foreverliving.com. I actually got it from my chiropracter. But, since I've been using that with the help of the alkaline diet, i have definetly gotten alot better. I still have moments but it's not 24/7. I really suggest you try this toothpaste.

Hi Ladies,I had breast cancer and went through chemo.I had bad reflux the whole time.I had a endoscopic test for stomach aches and they found that i have Barrets Asophagus.If acid reflux burns your asophigus to much it can damage a small area that regulates the open and closure for acid,mine stays open and the acid flows up my asophigus.Its now precancerous and i have to have biopsies often.Look up Barrets Asophigas and read it. I have that problem. Take mucinex twice a day with water for the mucous. And for the other problem, I'm sure you know this but just in case. After a meal, wait anywhere from 20 - 60 minutes before drinking anything. Also, eat slower and smaller portions.
