Hi everyone,

I just found you guys on the internet and I really need some advice. I was told years ago that I had Acid Reflux. I have been on Nexium everyday for this. I am also asthmatic.

about a week ago I started haveing way more heartburn then normal and have been having chest pain. The pain moves around between my breast bones and sometimes it is on the left side also, sometimes all over and sometimes more on the right. For the most part my asthma is fine but I notice I get a littel anxious and then I have a hard taime taking in a breath.

I went to the GI on Thursday and we doubled my Nexium along with tums after meals. I am no better and sometimes worse. The paion is pretty constant. I have an Endoscopy scheduled for Friday of this week but I can't help wondering if this is related to my heart or lungs or something else.

I had an EKG in September and last April a chest x-ray. Both came out normal. I do suffer from some anxiety but even when I take meds for it, the pain in my chest does not go away. I just wanted to see if anyone experienced the same feelings I have had. I sit here and there is pain in my chest. I certainly do not want to cry wolf but how can my dr's be so certain this is not heart related withour further testing.

Any advice or stories would be greatly appreciated.

Before I was aware of having GERD, I made several trips to the ER: I thought it must be my heart the chest pain was so bad. After I was diagnosed with GERD, I decided not to put myself through the ER again any time soon for chest pain ... so when later I had terrible chest pain at night - actually for 2 nights running - couldn't even turn over - it was my left side, if I remember - got up in the middle of the night, and B-U-R-P-E-D. The pain was instantly gone. It's amazing how painful GERD can be.

Well, that's my experience. The Catch-22 of using PPI's is that they heal the esophagus but I think make your condition actually worse.

Try warm water and... move around in case it's trapped gas.

Hi... I'm wondering how many years you have been on Nexium?

  Sorry to hear it's not working for you anymore...it seems that our bodies finally get used to them and they are like any drug, you have to take more and more.  If the doctor's ruled out heart trouble, it is probably GERD and I know the pain can be excruiating.  Yesterday, I felt like I was cured of heartburn...felt wonderful....and today I woke up and took my Prevacid and the burning started, then took some Pepcid, and it got worse so here I sit, just burning up...I can't figure it out either.  The more meds I take, the worse it gets.

Lonibel, it's amazing how well warm water works for relieving that pain. I found that a glass of warm water often made me burp up enough to ease the discomfort that was in my chest or stomach. And yes, moving around when you've got gas lodged really does help. I learned that trick while having an ultrasound many years ago. The technician couldn't get a good view of something because of gas that was blocking the way...so she got me to move around from side to side and that seemed to do the trick. Afterwards I found it helped in bed at night if things started getting painful. When all else fails...get up and walk around. That'll usually loosen everything up.
