I just read, I think from Sillylilly, about
bile coming up in your throat. Does bile also burn? Does anyone know any natural remedies to help with bile? I wonder if there is a connection between the presence of bile and slow digestion.

Lonnibel...yes bile can burn also. My doc's nurse told me that constipation can cause bile to back up into stomach and reflux up so I guess this goes along with slow digestion....and PPI's cause slow digestion and constipation for me. So sometimes, the acid we can feel is bile and not stomach acid. I'm not sure about
natural remedies for bile but make sure that you are having regular BM's.

I have taken probiotic chewable tablets and that doesn't seem to be helping with making more BM...Bye the way, are we supposed to make one BM a day?

Bile doesn't always come from the small intestines. I have severe bile reflux, post gallbladder removal.

So what treatment is effective for bile reflux? Have you had any success?

I just realized that I am actually getting bile reflux in my throat and not acid reflux. It is worse in the morning, right after I take my Prilosec which makes sense if the med reduces the acid in my stomach. I notice if I take an antacid like Tums or Rolaids right when the bile taste starts, it seems to do a pretty good job of helping.
Does anyone else have any ideas on how to deal with this?

I have a theory about
the intestine playing a large part in GERD along with IBS. That is part of the reason, I think, they tend to go hand in hand, but not exactly. Check out this article: http://www.enzymestuff.com/conditionbacteria.htm Since I have been following this basic routine more or less I have found that my heartburn has gone away for the most part except some here and there.
I suffered with GERD for a while until taking enzymes that over time helped alleviate it to almost gone completely except for heartburn. It takes time. I have never taken any medications for heartburn or GERD even though I have had some pretty severe cases of it.
I have tried many things and what works for me may or may not help you. It is a hit or miss thing. Even though we all have the same problem (GERD, heart burn etc) it could be caused by several things and our body chemistry along with damage varies.
I would stay away from meds as much as possible and look into natural medicnes to help. If you do take meds don't take them for too long. Meds usually just deal with the symptoms and not the core problem.
There is one thing I also need to do more of and will help with my digestion and overall health. Exercise. I need to do that much more. Hope this helps. God Bless.

How does the GI doctor determine if it is indeed bile, and not acid?

That's a good question.
Vangelicmonk....when you say you have had severe cases of GERD...could you describe your symptoms.

sillylilly, I thought that you said that they determined that you have bile coming up. So I thought you'd be able to answer how this was determined...
