My Doctor's office called me recently to tell me that my last blood test showed high calcium (norm is 10.4, I have 10.6). I have been doing alot of internet research to find causes of high calcium: parathyroid tumor, sarcoidosis, bone cancer, padgets bone disease, chronic kidney disease..... but when I searched webmd.com for high calcium I found an article that linked nexium
http://www.webmd.com/heartburn-gerd/news/20061227/acid-reflux-durgs-may-up-fractures to hip fractures, stating that:
It's not entirely clear why this happens. Stomach acid helps the body absorb calcium, which is needed for healthy bones. But it only takes a little bit of acid to do this. That may be why Yang's team finds only a "modest" fracture risk with low doses of proton-pump inhibitors and a "much higher magnitude" risk with high doses.
It may also explain why they found no link between other types of GERD drugs and hip fracture. Other GERD treatments include histamine blockers -- referred to as H2 antagonists; they specifically block the histamine type 2 receptor, preventing histamine from stimulating acid-producing cells. H2 antagonists include Tagamet, Zantac, Axid, and Pepcid
Has anybody heard anything about this, any idea what qualifies as "high dosage". It makes me kind of worried to continue nexium, but I am lost without it. I do have doctors appointments so I am "talking to my doctor" in case anyone wants to suggest that :). I'd just like to see what other people have to say or if anyone has had simliar blood tests.
