Hi

 

I finally had an endo last October after over 3 years of off and on problems. What got me to go was the fact that I was having swallowing issues. Well the GI did the endo and found absolutely nothing wrong with me. Immediately after that the swallowing issues disappeared. Well guess what they started up again.

 

My question is has anybody had this happen to them before especially the swallowing issues and the doc finds nothing wrong. I have to admit the past couple of years have been stressful I lost my son in an accident in May of 2005. The first swallowing problem started in October of 2005 and went away after starting prescription prilosec. In September of 2006 it started again which prompted me to see the GI.

 

I have no problems taking my vitamins which are big pills its just the eating which freaks me out and makes me want to avoid it all together.

 

Thanks for listening and any feed back would really help because I am really stressed out over this.

I was diagnosed a year ago with gerds, and at the time had no swallowing issues...except for having the lump in throat feeling, or feeling like something was kind of stuck there. When I was first having problems I would feel the food going down my esophagus...strange sensation.
Anyhow, after almost a year of being on protonix 1x a day, and changing my diet, I thought I was learning to live with this...I wasnt 100% but it was manageable. Then a few months ago, I started having some big swallowing issues. It was like my swallowing reflex just stopped, and when Id go to swallow, it woud hesitate for a second or two. Needless to say this terrified me. The dr ordered an enhanced barium upper gi series, and full severe reflux was noted affecting my throat area as well...Also hiatal hernia and gastritis. No ulcers, or erosions, blockages or strictures found.
The dr put me on nexium for a month, which I cant say helped anymore than the protonix did...The dr told me that the problem swallowing is due to tissues being swollen or damaged from the acid. I am now on protonix 2x a day, and zoloft for anxiety. The swallowing problem has subsisded some, but then again, sometimes it resurfaces. I dont think its as bad as it was initially, because at times I couldnt even swallow saliva. But, it freaks me out when i try to eat and i feel the hesitation in my reflex. I dont know why it comes and goes either. Mine never seems to leave for more than a few weeks. I am wondering if it is stress more than the acid problem??....or maybe both. Its awful hard to relax when I have this symptom though....It stresses me out!...So, as I dont have any suggestions, ,at least you know that you arent alone!!

I kind of had the same thing a couple years ago----both problem swallowing AND anxiety (b/c I had a hard time swallowing)----the GI guy stretched my esphogus a little---and told me that I had a slight hiatal hernia----but, that it was mostly anxiety! I took lexipro for about 6 months--and felt a lot better--until about 4 months ago---having the same problems (plus others----pain under sternum, cramping around my ribs, cramping and pain throughout my whole digestive tract, etc...). needless to say, I am going to see a NEW GI specialist--but, not until the end of October----SIGH! I have a swallowing issue too, except it pains in my mid esophagus after i swallow. I am having Endo next week monday. I have history of acid reflux but i think this time the culprit is doxycycline, or at least thats what my doctor thinks.

Thanks guys for replying I thought I was alone....

I am now starting to get heartburn and its freaking me out. I am under alot of stress though
