Hey there Sweetie. I am sorry about your diagnosis, but PLEASE PLEASE don't let yourself go crazy worrying about cancer. Here's why: A small number of people with Barrett's esophagus may develop esophageal cancer. For people who have Barrett's esophagus, the risk of getting cancer of the esophagus is small: less than 1 percent (0.4 percent to 0.5 percent) per year. Evidently, your Barretts isn't severe if they are only saying you have a "bit of it." Here are some things you need to keep in mind... People who have Barrett's esophagus should have periodic esophageal examinations. Taking acid-blocking drugs for GERD may result in improvements in Barrett's esophagus. Removal of the esophagus is recommended only for people who have a high risk of developing cancer or who already have it. The bottom line here bok is to not worry yourself about getting cancer. Just keep up with your esophageal exams, and keep in touch with your doctor about what's going on with your body. If something is to happen, and you do get cancer, as long as you are keeping up with your exams and such, you will likely catch it early enough to handle it. Please, stay on top of your health, and keep us posted! Wishing you the best.
