Oh it will be way down the road if I try soda. I agree about pacing yourself. You know garlic isnt on the bad list but it sure bothered me, is it conciered a spicy food?

Well my phelm issues ended up being a case of Bronchitus just what I need. I knew it probably woudl because I had a cold before the surgery and I wasnt strong enough to fight it.

What concerns me more is I was in a hurry to get back to the office so got a small hamburger and was in traffic and not concentrating on chewing and it got lodged. I had to retch to get it up, very painful. It all came up and I dont htink it managed to even reach my stomach. I am worried I might have torn the wrap since we are not supposed to be retching. Would we know if we tore it? I mean wouldnt I be in bad pain? I dont know, Im worried so I have a call inot the nurse. That was soooo stupid of me to do that!!!

So the pain has subsided and after talking to the nurse I think the hambuger got lodged before the wrap, water didnt make it go down so I retched and the water and burger came up. No blood or anything just water and burger. The pain was from the lodging not the wrap ripping. She said that having the wrap tear is pretty rare but also agreed during the healing process it is especially important to be careful. She said if it happened most people fill a pop and lots of pain. I think if I was to throw something up that got into my stomach and had to vomit violenting it would be more of a problem I am fine now so I hope all is well. I will not be driving and eating anymore!!

Hello to all I've been chatting with and comparing recoveries with. I've noticed that there isn't much new material being posted, just the same questions posed by newer members who haven't read older posts.  There's nothing more I can add to this board that's constructive. I'm dropping out and want to wish everyone a good outcome with upcoming surgery, continued progress towards a better life for those who are post surgery, and best wishes to those who are on the testing road to determine if surgery is a good option for them.

Doghouse, Porcelain Doll, Another Day, Booklady12, Allycar00 and Tammy - it's truly been a pleasure chatting with you this past month. I wish you all the best. God Bless, Merry Christmas, and a happy, healthy New Year.

Post edited...Sweetie, you have been a great help to this board, and I appriciate all the help you have given so many of our members.  I did however have to edit your post, because although I know you mean no harm to anyone, some of what you posted seemed a bit insulting.  We frown upon insulting on any level.  Some people are not good at typing, and some people may struggle with punctuation. 

I would love for you to stick with us and share your stories with us, but if you decide it's not for you, then I wish you the best.

HappilyWrapped, I think you have been very helpful to others on the site.  I also hope everything goes well with your gallbladder surgery and that you will keep us posted on that.

As for some of your message above, such as members doing something they knew they shouldn't do, I know I certainly got food stuck many times during my post-op recovery because I ate to fast.  I think a lot of people have to learn this the hard way.  I know I did.

Regarding the spelling and punctuation, I think a lot of times people get on a forum or message board and just let their fingers fly and don't think to spell check.  Personally, I don't know that it is all that important as long as we can understand what they are trying to say.

We try hard to keep everything positive at HealingWell and I would not want to deter members from posting because of their spelling or punctuation.

Finally, I am able to get back on the gerd board!!!! I didn't have internet, cable, and phone service since Nov. 21 because of a wiring problem with Time Warner and had to switch everything to Att which took forever.  So to make a long story short, I am glad to be back on-line.  Today is my 7th week anniversary and little by little things are getting better but I know I just have to be patient.  I also had my follow up appointment with my surgeon and told him that it has been a tough journey on the road to recovery.  My nausea has gotten better and haven't taken a nausea pill in 3 weeks.  The problem I am having now is constipation and he told me he doesn't want me to straign while having bowel movements.  He says I have to drink about 80 oz. of water a day and about 30-40 grams of fiber a day.  I know that my problem is so because after my surgery it has been really hard to drink so much water (who wants to drink water mixed with lots of nausea) yuck?  I really am trying but I am finding it difficult to drink so much water post op.  I still have some chest pain and he said it just takes time.  He was glad to hear I don't take PPI's anymore.  Also, I did okay at Thanksgiving and ate a little bit of everything but in very small portions.  I guess I will keep it short today and hope and pray that everyone is doing good.  Barbara....

It's great to hear from you again.  I can understand you not wanting to drink water when you were so nauseated.  That would have been the last thing I would have wanted too.  I would have wanted my Diet Sprite, but of course that would not have worked.  I'm glad to hear you are making progress and back on-line with us.

I have had a first today!  I had my surgery in March of 2005 and have been afraid to try coffee.  One of my daughters stopped by this morning and asked if I had any coffee.  I told her I would make some that I had been wanting to try some since my surgery.  I had two cups of vanilla coffee and it was oh, so very good.  What a treat!  Why did I wait so long?  I've made coffee for guests before but didn't have any myself.

Have you tried that water, I think it's made by special K, that has 5 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber in it per serving? I've tried the packets you mix into water, I think the flavor I tried was pink lemonade, it's actually pretty good. Then you'll get some H2O, some fiber and some extra protein. Of course I haven't had the surgery so it's just a thought but it didn't make me feel bloated and it tasted pretty good.

I go to the gastro doc tomorrow to see if I'm a candidate for the surgery....

I've read through all of part 1 and 2 and can't seem to find the answer to my question.  My history....today is my post op day 12 after my lap nissen.  I was on 80 mg of omeprazole without long term success, I had an EGD, and Barium Swallow that were both positive for reflux.  I then had the dreaded manometry and finally my gallbladder was cleared with a hyda (sp) scan.

My symptoms were constant sore throat and nausea/stomach ache. 

The first 8 days after the nissen were very painful, but I made it okay.  Biggest concern was how I was going to keep weight on as I'm small to start with.

Here's the problem.  2 days ago my symptoms returned.  Throat irritation with that feeling that there's something in there, and stomach ache. I feel good when I wake up and as soon as I eat or drink it's back with a vengeance.

I see my surgeon for my post op visit tomorrow and I'm afraid he's going to think I'm nuts. Everyone keeps telling me not to jump to conclusions but I'm very familiar with my symptoms before the surgery and they are the same.   I'm feeling very emotional and depressed.  This has been very expensive and I can't bear the thought of doing it again in the new year, starting over with deductible and out of pocket costs.

Has anyone else had these symptoms post op?  If so, did your nissen fail?

I am almost afraid to ask this question. I can't read through all of the old posts for health reasons. I have posted this question before, but I guess most folks haven't heard of paraesophageal hiatal hernia, which brings me to my question.

I noticed that the question first asked was about the nissan fund. being done for hernias. I have the type of hernia I mentioned above. Does anyone else have that type and was that the reason for your Nissan. (I am not spelling the next part because I don't know the correct spelling!) Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me.

A nissen fundoplication procedure wraps the stomach around the esophagus much like a turtleneck shirt around a neck. It tightens the area where the esophagus and stomach come together and prevents acid reflux. This procedure is not done to repair a hiatal hernia. It's purpose is to reinforce the valve at the end of the esophagus which means stomach contents can no longer travel up into the esophagus.

A hiatal hernia is a larger than normal opening in the diaphragm where the esophagus goes through the diaphragm to get to the stomach. To repair it, the surgeon stitches the opening closed so that it snugs up against the esophagus like it should be. In your case, you have a paraesophageal hiatal hernia. This means that the opening in the diaphragm where the esophagus goes through it to get to the stomach has widened and part of your stomach has moved up and into your chest cavity. To repair your hernia, the surgeon will push your stomach back down where it belongs and close the diaphragm opening enough to snug it up to the esophagus thus preventing the stomach from moving up into the chest cavity again.

The above are 2 separate procedures to correct 2 different problems. The reason you see them together so often is because many people who have fundoplication surgery also have a hiatal hernia that requires repair. If a person has just a hiatal hernia, then the surgery to correct the hernia and close the opening in the diaphragm is the only procedure done.

Thank you so much, Happily Wrapped! Four years ago after an endoscopy I was told I have a hiatal hernia. I also wonder if the regular became the paraesophageal hiatal hernia or if there are two separate hernias. I guess these are the questions I'll be asking my gastro doc.

Hello All,

I'm new here and I have suffering from heartburn since I was a teenager. I have been on nexium twice a day for several years and prevacid before that, etc. Tums has always been a good friend. My concern is that my heartburn seems to have "kicked it up a notch". I am now also taking reglan 4x a day. My doctor mentioned surgery but it seems like the recovery is kind of rough. My upper GI showed no reflux and my endoscopy showed no erosion but did show a small hiatal hernia. Sorry for the length of my post.....

Finally, are there any alternatives to surgery that any of you know of or is it the most succesful option?
Also, the reglan makes me stir crazy, fidgety....anyone else?

Ask the same question you have here, but post it on the Part 3 of POST OP LAP NISSEN FUNDO/HIATEAL HERNIA REPAIR. This is Part 2 and no one's been posting here anymore after reading the message just before yours. Or better yet, start a new topic, introduce yourself and wait for answers - you won't wait long.

And the surgery isn't as bad as you think. If the surgery is successful, life 4 months post op can be amazing. If the wrap ever slips, I'd do it again with no reservations. If your doctor mentioned the surgery, then it might be worth pursuing. They would't have mentioned it if they didn't think it was going to help you.

Look at it this way - you could opt for surgery and a few months later you'll either feel much better or you will know that surgery wasn't a good option because you're still having symptoms - or you could opt to continue as you are and several months from now you'll still be having heartburn, ingesting medications, having side effects and wondering what would have happened if you had had surgery.

This is an excerpt from a web site that gives drug information - these are some side effects of reglan:

depressed mood, thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself;
hallucinations, anxiety, agitation, jittery feeling, trouble staying still

I had my lap nissen operation for heartburn which also repaired the hiatal hernia.  They did a complete wrap.  I have had a lot of problems with gas which makes me feel I want to go to the bathroom often.  My procedure was done about 1 1/2 years ago.  Shouldn't this have resolved by this time? Can this wrap be adjusted?

(P.S.  My operation went well, I have no pain, do not burp- but that's o.k. I had the stomach flu and it made having such a flu go much easier!)
