Throat symptoms

Just curious to those that have problems with there throat due to acid reflux. I would be very grateful to listen to your experience cause mine is really getting painful.

I never get the taste of acid in my throat which is why I question this. for months now I get a burning at the top of my back where the bone meets the neck. I get pain all down the front of the neck where the adams apple is & it radiates to underneath my ears. I have to keep feeling my neck to see if I have lumps. if I talk on the phone for long periods of time my throat hurts when I speak, feels like I am losing my voice I have to cough all the time as I feel something is stuck.

I was taking prilosec for a month which did not help, now I am on zantex 150mg & after meals i take Maalox still not helping. before I never took maalox & I was always constipated now with maalox I have constant diarreah.

To be honest I am getting very frustrated as I really feel is acid the problem even tho I had an endescope & had an imflammed esophagus. just dont make sense all medication taken so far is not helping.

Hi there Red...I agree again with outlaw...you need to go back to the doc and let him know that this is going on. You don't have to suffer, and there has to be something your doctor could do. If your doctor gives you issues, then get a 2nd opinion. Please, keep us posted as to how you are doing!

My throat is sometimes very painful. Sometimes I have a terrible taste in my mouth. I have read that the theodur I used for my asthma may have caused the GERD. I am taking the medicine (omeprazole --- a ppi) now as I have to because I take a heavy duty arthritis medicine (mobic) for pain. My doc explained that I could come down with a bleeding ulcer if I do not take a ppi when I am using any heavy duty asprin-based product on a regular basis.

ppi (proton pump inhibitors) are supposed to be good for chronic gerd.

Thankyou for your replies, I will update you, I am going to lay it down on the table cause this is no fun at all. the way I feel if my esophagus is inflammed what is it doing to my throat so i want it checked out.

Went to the Gi Doc today. He said he will prescribe different medication for a month Acidfex 2 x a day but my insurance said that is over there dose limit so now it will be Acidfex 1 x a day & prilosec otc 1 x a day. the doc said see if that helps give it a month & get back to him, if it still dont help they will do a PH test to see if it is acid related as I told him I dont really get heart burn & never taste acid in my mouth so bacically he said if the PH test shows the acid not being to much to cause my throat problem he will refer me to an ENT doctor. I did ask the question about the throat, would an endescope find any abnormality in the throat area & he said no but he did say when he examined my neck that he never felt any masses so he is pretty sure that its not the big C word. I also asked about certain medication such as prilosec & Zantex effecting your bowels & making you constipated he said yes it can do that & maalox & Mylanta going the opposite & making you go more he said yes. The other question was about him suggesting barretts but as the biospies came out negative of barretts what did it mean in change of reflux, he said that I had acid & there was a change in the amount of reflux produced but that can change anytime this is why the PH test will tell them how much I have & wether it is causing the pain I have.

Hmmm, you could have severe post nasal drip, that can give you a nasty and painful sore throat....which would be diagnosed by an ENT. I had a friend who had it, they kept thinking she had strep or reflux, finally sent her to an ENT and it was post nasal drip. Put her on a medication (I don't remember what it was) and some kind of prescription nasal spray and then it disappeared.

Just a thought....if the GERD medications aren't working could be something not related...I have to take Zegerid twice a day and I have esophagitis from so much reflux....however my PH test showed no reflux so just keep that in mind. (I must have had a good day when I had the ph test) :)

Thanks Joan, the pillow sounds good the only thing is I dont really suffer when I am sleeping its more during the day & of a night before bed, I am beginning to wonder if a lot is Anxiety, I was looking up symptons on anxiety & I seem to fit the description but of cause if i do have anxiety think its due to gerd making me feel awful. I will take all the test the doctor suggests to give me piece of mind & if all is well I will seek further with my usual doctor on anxiety. I never realised anxiety could take you down so much. I do know I have problems with my esophagus as it showed in the endoscope but wether that is what is causing the pain is another thing.

Thankyou doghouse it really would be nice if it was just post nasal drip as this gerd is the most awful thing anyone could have.

Hey Blinky, I really think you should open another thread for your problem you will get a lot more response. I would love to answer your question but i dont have the same problem, I am sure there are ppl that do this is why I say open another thread.

hi red...I thought the same thing too because I sleep rather soundly. But now I know better. One of my big problems is that I am a night eater. I also think women have a tendency to suppress belches which is not a good thing. I also have the sinus mess and at this point my throat has been sore for so long that I figure it is both. Anyway I wish everybody good luck and take care of yourself.

Yes i have had very sore throat all the way into my neck. Yes I have lost my voice and have the lump in my throat thing too. there are two kinds of acid reducing medicines...the fast acting ones that you take right away and the slower ones (ppi's). You should talk to your druggist about the different kinds of medicine.

Drinking plenty of liquids can't hurt. Take care of yourself. If you live in a cold climate make sure to wear a warm scarf around your neck.

Yes...I had the ph test and they give you a sedative and it is not that uncomfortable. Mine was borderline but as I may have explained in this thread...I have to take a ppi (perscription drug) so that I can take the mobic for my arthritis. Mobic is also a perscription drug for arthritis and has an aspirin component in it.

I forgot to mention that you should be gargling as much as possible. Regular mouthwash, salt water, water and apple vinegar juice...there are others. That will definately help relieve your symptoms (I hope!)

I live in upper New York State now as I am retired, use to live in the Big Apple. Hope you feel better soon and go ahead and get the ph test. Throat cancer is very rare and GERD is very common. You and I both have atypical GERD.
