Hi Newmother,
I've had a few of the symptoms you describe, although I have not been diagnosed with IBS, doctors told me I had GERD. Never liked the way the nexium, protonix and all the other drugs made me feel, so I've been searching for a natural way. I was really watching what I ate for a while and managed to control my reflux during the day. I really didn't have the acid burning feeling but I could definitely feel like food or something backing up into my esophagus, especially at night. So I started looking into slow stomach emptying posibilities and what to do about it. Well, I've been taking digestive enzymes along with slippery elm and glutamine among other things and they helped. However I was starting to feel nauseated and feeling like I needed to throw up, probably from food just staying in my stomach and going bad in there. A friend of mine from India recomended fennel seeds, and they have made a world of a difference for me. I had the best holiday season food wise, because I would eat and then have my seeds at the end of my meals and I felt great! And I'm almost back to a flat bed again. (Had to tilt it a little bit to prevent reflux at night). You can find them at an oriental market, not sure if they have them at regular markets, they are only $2, you should try and see how you feel.
Also, whenever I'm feeling backed up like you say, I take Natural Calm, its a magnesium supplement that loosens up your muscles, including your intestines and you don't get any cramping or anything painful.
i really hope this helps you!
Believe me I got my whole family hooked on fennel seeds now.
Just take a about a 1/4 tsp. after meals.
Good luck!
