Regarding burning throat

Hello all,

Just an update, I went to see the ENT yesterday because for the past 11 months I seem to have a constant sore throat with the feeling of wanting to clear it all the time. the Doctor told me that he can see why my throat is sore that it is my vocal cords are red. But to my disapointment he said that there is nothing he can give me for it as he does not know why the cause is. He said it could be from reflux or smoking & I do take aciphex for the reflux with no change. He told me to go back in 3 months to have a recheck he said he is sure that he never see anything such as cancer which I am very pleased as it took a lot of stress away from me. I must admit I am still suffering the sore throat but it dont seem to be as bad when you know that its not life threatning.

One more thing does anyone know if hormones changing can effect reflux as when I am due my monthly it always seems to be more aggresive.

Red, I hope this isn't stepping on your toes, but have you seriously made every attempt to quit smoking? That would be such a good place to start. I think you'd be amazed in the overall improvement in a lot of your symptoms.

I will be flying home to the UK on the 16th of Feb when I come back I am gonna try & give up smoking. I know its going to be very tuff but i really need to try my hardest even if not for me I need to do it for my kids who are 18 months & 7 months. I dont smoke around them but i am sure it would give me a lot more energy to run after them & play with them instead of being miserably in pain.

Just remember if you slip up there are no laws saying you failed, that is just part of weaning your self off. I quit smoking 5 years ago and I have been trying to get my hubby to quit but he has to want to.... I am glad to hear you want to quit.

The worst of it is, I am home all day with 2 young kids, its nice to go outside just to have a ciggy. Because all my family live in England I find it very lonely when my husband is at work. I have never worked here so meeting new people has been hard so basically I am a loner. I will still try cause I would love to give up. I did try chantix once but that made my throat worse, when the doctor checked the ingredients she said yes if you have reflux you best not continue using them.

hi there i had a sore throat on morning every morning then it went after i got up and had a drink. the ent said its acid coming up, so they packet me off with ppi,s,mine they think is acid related so i gone to a gastrolgist to see if we can find the cause . i still wake up with a sore inflammed throat it s a pain

Hi there Bokbok, I have seen a GI doc who confirms I have gerd, the weird thing about it I dont have heartburn what so ever I just have burning throat & top of the back this is why I went to see an ENT doc who said I have red vocal cords known as laryngitis. I have been on different medications which none of them seem to help & with the insurance I have they can be a pain on what & how many tablets you are allowed to take. So now I am trying to book a 24 PH test to see how much acid I do have, but yet again i never get or feel acid in the throat. I do have another appointment with the ENT in 3 months, he said he never see cancer but come back in 3 months he said just in case I missed something. he did say he dont think he missed anything but if cancer was there it would progress in 3 months that made me nervous. I have had these symptoms for a year now so i am sure if cancer was there they would have seen it by now. but it has put me on edge what he said. If this does turn out to be acid I am seriously considering the nissen wrap cause how much can I take & I am positive anxiety has set in as well.

Just to add my two cents...you can definitely have GERD without heartburn...it's weird but I do!

you are so right marthamae but dont you ever get the feeling someone has missed something. I know I got the pictures of my esophagus & yes you can see it is red at first the GI doc thought it was barretts lucky for me the biopsies came back no barretts just changes in reflux whatever that is supposed to mean.

I am very tempted to go to a health shop & get some aloevera juice, have you tried it? I heard it is good but never got it, now I think i will try anything just to get rid of this pain.

Do you usually lie down right after(1-2 hrs after) you drink/eat?.

To be honest I rarely eat anything through out the day I seem to feel sick, I have lost over 40lb which was very much needed it was more a concern when I kept losing through my pregnancies. Both pregnancies I weighed 10lb less when heavily pregnant to what i started out at.

When I do eat its more in the morning or early afternoon, dont eat at all of a night. Just wish i could relate the pain to eating just seems constant all day sometimes not as bad but still discomfort.

I will see what happens when I am in England, could be anxiety from being home sick.

hi there i just had the 24hour ph test plus the esophageal mobilty test they said my  valve is working fine and i do have short acid episodes but thats it really just carry on taking tablets which i dont think are doing me any good. the ph test i dont think is that accurate cause when stop ppi,s a week before they still repressing cause i,m taking them for 2 years i dont there out of your system in a week

The Ph test they want me to take is the one that is not taken out you digest. The nurse said the doctor wants me to continue taking the ppi's.

bokbok you are so lucky to have bupa, you would be waiting forever if it was national health. Lucky for me I live in the US and have insurance the worst thing about the insurance is they limit you to what meds you have. I am of to London on the 16th my mum is getting me a bottle of gaviscon so will see how that goes.

I would see a Gastrointestinal doctor.....Cover ALL your bases!!!
