Hi!

I checked out this site because I have been having a problem with a low grade fever.  It's been ongoing for months and the doctor can't figure out what's wrong.  She has done the TB test which came back negative, blood tests (also negative) and has sent me to an infectious disease doctor who did a lot of blood tests but I haven't heard any results.  He's also having me get a CT scan of the lower abdominals, but I don't understand why.  She's also referred me to a rheumatologist, but I haven't seen her yet.

My primary care physician's had me have a CT scan and found out I had a sinus infection, but the antibiotics she prescribed afterwards didn't help at all.  I checked my pharmacy and found out that I've been prescribed 9-10 antibiotics in the last 18 months. 

My previous doctor told me I had a lot of acid, but I don't know how she determined it because all I had from her was a blood test.  I've never had a test for acid reflux or GERD, but I do know that I get the burpies from time to time depending on what I've eaten and how fast I've eaten it.  And the protonix and Zantac do help.  But I've never heard that you can get a low grade fever (between 99 and 99.4) from acid reflux.

I also had a filling fall out of my tooth shortly before all this started happening, but I've had the root canal and am being fitted for a crown tomorrow.  I thought maybe the bad tooth had caused this feeling, but I'm not sure now because I'm still feeling that way.

So...I started wondering if my low grade fever could be caused by the acid reflux or if it could be allergy related.  I know allergies aren't supposed to cause a fever, but if that's the case, why is it called hay fever??

I'm starting to worry that they're never going to find out what my problem is and I'm tired of feeling this rotten. 

Anyone who can help me at least narrow down what the problem is would be greatly appreciated!!

Have a question. Do you have any pets or have you had or been around any cats/dogs etc in the last few months?

Hello Maddy and welcome to HealingWell. the key signs and sx of GERD  are Heartburn, Acid Reflux, Difficulty swallowing, Chest pain, persistent coughing and hoarness. 

I have not heard of fever unless you have an infection going on somewhere else.

Which I had more to offer you.

I have a cat, actually.  Unfortunately, I'm one of those people who needs a pet to come home to.  I live alone and being alone most of the time can put me into a very deep depression.  I tried it without a pet for a while and it nearly drove me nuts!  I've had a cat for the last 12 years and these symptoms have only been in the last year to year and a half.

Thanks for the welcome!

I haven't had any chest pain, but I do have difficulty swallowing sometimes, hoarseness and some coughing.  I have heard of a stomach bacteria that sometimes accompanies GERD, but otherwise, I don't know of anything either.

I have had cats for quite a while and have some now. I also rescue kittens and cats if they will let me. The reason I asked is that I didn't suspect that I had cat scratch fever(bartonella), but I believe that I do and am treating it right now. Up until recently I had no inkling other than a lot of the symptoms that I have read about online(bartonella can infect practically every organ of the body including the brain and cause chonic fatigue and a lot of other symptoms including swollen lymph nodes etc). I have a blister that formed on the back of my head from a cat claw puncture.
It seems that folks that have dogs or cats are at risk for bartonella induced cat scratch fever.

The low grade fever could be from a infection from the tooth problem. It would not be from GERD but the hoarseness, difficulty swallowing and coughing are definete GERD problems. You can get a test for H. pylori from your Doctor. It is a simple test. It will show if you have an ulcer but frankly it doesn't sound like you have one as you probably would have more symptoms.

You can have a low grade fever with gall bladder problems.

Do you have any pain under your right ribs or pain in the upper right quadrant of your chest? Any nausea or vomiting? Excessive wind?

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks!  I'm really appreciating them!!

My cat was declawed when I got her and I haven't been scratched by her recently that I remember.  I try to keep her back claws clipped too. 

I found out the results of the blood tests the infectious disease doctor ordered yesterday afternoon.  They were all in the normal range. 

2 of my friends have had their gall bladders removed and I don't seem to be having the same symptoms they did, but I'm gonna keep it in mind as a suggestion to my primary care physician as to where she might also check if everything else is still coming out normal.

I also was at the dentist yesterday getting the crown on my broken tooth and was told I have another tooth that will probably be needing a crown soon also.  The tooth directly across from the one I just got the crown put on.  He said that's not uncommon.  He also told me that it looked like it might abcess too.  It's not at the present time, but it does look like it could.  I'm gonna be having my teeth cleaned on Oct. 24 and they're going to check the tooth and see how soon it might have to be done.  Since it's not hurting right now, I was told I could probably wait on getting that seen to.  They'll decide when I go back for the cleaning, unless it starts bothering me before then.

I'm noticing that there is a lot of drainage right now and I'm clearing my throat a lot. Guess that could be either the acid reflux or the sinus infection I'm beginning to suspect this of being.  The one that's already been diagnosed by a CT scan back in April.  I'm still wondering if my problem could be an antibiotic resistant sinus infection.  Or if it could be the tooth/teeth.  Or if it could be acid reflux being brought on by either one of those two things.   idea

My surgeon told me that most people with GERD suffer from PND (post nasal drip) and have sinus problems so it could be an infection like you said.

I hope you are able to get rid of it soon. Keep us posted. :-)

Hello and ou got some great answers and good advice.  I would think if you have had a abcessed tooth you would have a fever or the sinus infection could be the culprit too.

I hope you soon find out what it is.

I was diagnosed with PND when I was 7! Makes sense, BoPeep. I went grocery shopping yesterday and picked up a few things that should help keep the bacteria in my mouth from being the problem (with the teeth). I bought some Listerine. I figured at the least, it will help with the tooth that may abcess. At the most, it might make me feel better. I'm also doing a nasal saline rinse once or twice a day.

And I'm back on Protonix too. :-) I have been on Pantoprazol as the generic form for about 6 months. My insurance upped the price on the generic so I asked for Protonix which was actually what I had been prescribed. Why pay for a generic when it's the same price as the name brand? And the Protonix worked better for me than the Pantoprazol ever did. I don't know why. I was getting other symptoms back that had gone away with the Protonix as well. Just wish I was good at describing how it felt. But I'll try and maybe this is a symptom of acid reflux too?? Since the Protonix is the only thing that seems to take the feeling away...

It feels like the tightening of the muscles in your body right before you get goosebumps. Only the goosebumps never come and feeling nauseous does. It lasts for about 5 minutes each time. This feeling has only happened since I had my ovaries removed too.  about 3 months after my surgery, the feelings I described starting hitting me. Unrelated at the time it seemed, my regular doctor gave me another prescription for Protonix because I had stopped taking them for a few months and had run out.  I don't like to be dependent on pills!!  But I know...if they body is going to work right, I have to take my meds.  Anyway, the feelings went away about 2 weeks after I started taking them again. I haven't had them since when I would take Protonix, but I've had them almost daily with the Pantoprazole. How can that be if they're supposed to be the same thing??
