7 years post-op and questions

Mrmantx I am sorry to hear that u are having problems with your Nisssen after all these years. What to u mean by "explosive BM after everytime u eat"? Do u mean diarrhea? If u have diarrhea(dumping syndrome) after meals, it could indicate that your Vagus Nerve has been damage during surgery. Please do some research on Vagus Nerve damage. This might answer your questions.

No, not necissarily diarrhea but not totally solid either. Basically, after every time I eat my stomach starts cramping and gurgling real bad and I have to find a restroom right then. It's almost like gas pressure builds up and when I finally am able to sit everything comes out in one forceful explosion (for lack of a better word). But, not liquid.
I'm sorry if this may be too much nasty information but I'd like to get to the 'bottom' of this as it's hard for me to go to lunch with my co-workers because I'm embarassed to have to stop on the way back to work EVERY TIME.

Hello and welcome to HealingWell. I have not had the surgery so I cannot speak directly to that but not eating and having dumping syndrome really does need to be addressed.



Have you seen a GI specialist re this very problem? My hubby has short bowel syndrome which leads to dumping syndrome. His GI physician has him on Metamucil which I know sounds crazy but the Metamucil helps bulk up his stools and slow down the time it takes for food to pass through the small intestine.



Also you have tagged onto an old thread. If you would like to start a new thread of your own you are more likely to find that members will see your first post and answer you in a timely manner.

I am so sorry to hear that nothing is working for you. I am concerned that you are not getting your nutrition as it is most likely being compromised from all the diarhhea you are experiencing.


The most common causes of diarrhea include:


Viruses. Common viruses that cause diarrhea are Norwalk virus, cytomegalovirus, viral hepatitis and the herpes simplex virus. Rotavirus is the most common cause of acute childhood diarrhea. Viral diarrhea spreads easily.

Bacteria and parasites. Contaminated food or water can transmit bacteria and parasites to your body. Parasites such as Giardia lamblia and cryptosporidium can cause diarrhea. Common bacterial causes of diarrhea include campylobacter, salmonella, shigella and Escherichia coli. Diarrhea caused by bacteria and parasites can be common when traveling in developing countries, and is often called traveler's diarrhea.



Medications. Many medications can cause diarrhea. The most common are antibiotics. Antibiotics destroy both good and bad bacteria, which can disturb the natural balance of bacteria in your intestines. This disturbance sometimes leads to an infection with bacteria called Clostridium difficile, which can also cause diarrhea.


Other causes:



Lactose. A sugar found in milk and milk products, lactose is a common cause of diarrhea in some people.



Fructose. Fructose, a sugar found in many fruits, is a common cause of diarrhea, especially in children.



Surgery. Some people may experience diarrhea after undergoing abdominal surgery or gallbladder removal surgery.



Other digestive disorders. Chronic diarrhea has a number of other causes, such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease and irritable bowel syndrome.



Wish I had more to offer. Hope that you continue to look for that one physician that will be able to help you. Also talking with a dietician may be a wise move for you.

Wow. Please help me-- Take action and demand from your doctor to be referred to another gastroenterologist OR if you live near or in a city where there are research/university hospitals--seek out specialists who might be able to help. The people here are very supportive and while we share stories and commiserate with each other--we are not doctors. The very simple medical rule of thumb is that if you are in that much pain (point of crying all day) you need to seek medical help immediately!! MM

The "new" design of the GI tract can cause the dumping and sudden urge to go after eating. I have dealt with it quite often. Mine does improve with certain meds like Questran or Colestid. Sometimes even they don;t help. IF you can't get any of your doctors to help it's time to fire them and find someone who will. I also recommend a teaching hospital if you have one near and can go there.
