When did any Nissen patients return to swallowing their pills whole? I know I have to wait and talk it over with my doc. I'm just curious to know what everyone else's experiences were. Thanks.

I was sent home from the hospital with pills for pain and also was told to keep taking my Prevacid until my surgeon said I could stop taking it. I wasn't told to break them up either, so I just swallowed them and let them sit and dissolve at the valve I guess. Eventually they dissolve enough and go through.
After 2 and 1/2 years I am right back in the same sitiution with pills getting stuck. Oh well.
I would recommend making them as small as necessary for you to get them down without discomfort.

Thanks Bill. I'm sorry you're having that problem 2.5 years post! They sent me home from the hospital with a pill crusher and it works great but boy some of those pills are NASTY tasting. It seems that mixing them with applesauce works the best for me. Guess I'll keep crushing.

Gerd girl, I think I was somewhere around 7 or 8 weeks post op. I'm not in the same boat as Bill, but we're docked at the same marina; I'm having some difficulties swallowing pills; at least my night time meds; it seems I always have to have a cracker-chaser to get rid of the feeling that something is hung up in there.

I'm on protonix 40mg twice a day still to protect my stomach from the ravages of prednosone and antibiotics. I have an extremely sensitive stomach that shuts down when assaulted, so I think it's a good plan. (I'm on Day 9, and have taken them since Day 5.)

I'm swallowing protonix whole...they're a good shape, and smooth...quite small. They seem to be going in, but who knows? I cut my prednosone into quarters (I had him give me smaller dose tablets and take 2)...then I swallow them with water one quarter at a time. I have always taken some giant vitamins, calcium, vitamin C complex, etc...I can't even imagine ever taking pills that size again...I don't know if I'd ever have the confidence.

I quit taking the pain meds, mainly because they were huge and nasty. Liquid Tylenol was so much easier.
