Question about a PPI and Celebrex

I have been on Prilosec for about 3 years and I just recently started taking Celebrex.  My doctors wanted to be sure I remained on the Prilosec to protect my stomach from the Celebrex.  At first I was taking the Celebrex in the mornings with my Prilosec but I found that the Celebrex wore off by the time I went to bed and I would wake up multiple times from being in pain.  So I started to take the Celebrex at night, which helps with the pain better.  So my question is - if anyone knows, is the Prilosec still "active" in my stomach to properly protect it from the Celebrex?

I can't speak to Prilosec specifically, but I can warn you about my experience using Aleve. Now keep in mind I have an extremely reactive and sensitive stomach. I was on Nexium 40mg twice a day, and was taking Aleve for back pain. I don't know how long I took the Aleve, but the long and short of it is that I ended up with severe gastritis/GERD, which flared up my asthma and landed me in the hospital. Be sure you take the Celebrex with food in your stomach.

One more thing. My doctor wants me taking my PPI (now Protonix 40mg) at night, because nighttime is when you're more likely to reflux. When I say night, I mean a half hour before dinner. if you did that, your PPI would definitely be more effective at night.

Thank you for your reply Denise. I tried taking my Prilosec before dinner a couple years ago but I found that my acid reflux hits worse in the mornings. The evenings aren't really that bad for me. I have mild reflux and/or gastritis so I can get by on one Prilosec a day. Once in a blue moon though I get a bit of burn in the evenings but that usually happens if I snack too late in the day.

Hi Red,
Be sure to take the Celebrex with plenty of food. If you get some stomach/GERD reaction, you might want to discuss the possibility of twice a day dosage of Prilosec.
