Please briefly answer these questions, I'm interested to hear answers (and commonalities?):

1) Were you a coffee drinker prior to GERD?

2) Did you ever take Prednisone, and do you think it made it worse?

3) Do you think PPIs have made your GERD worse over time, or has the PPI just become less effective?

4) Could you wean off PPIs, or do you think they are mandatory now?

5) Did you ever use an H2 blocker before the PPIs, and if so, why did you switch from H2 to PPI?

Thanks for answering - I'm fascinated by my issues.  I talked to a gastro recently who informed me that Nissen often returns back to pre-operative state after about 10 years, so it isn't a good surgery for younger people.  Sheesh.

stkitt: I see, interesting rule. Yes, I am asking for my personal benefit, but am noticing that this forum has strong moral support but very little medical content (and you seem to want to keep it that way). There is no way to understand this disease without profiling it, and nobody in the community wants to get "dirty". The doctors seem to know very little about causes and treatments - it is either PPIs, or surgery. That's fine, keep the ignorance, but I'm going to understand it, with or without help. I have searched and read many of the prior threads, and the information I'm trying to get is not present.

Out of respect for your community rules, I will disavow myself of this group and find a more knowledge-based forum. Best of luck to you folks, because you're going to need it if your problem is anything like mine.

I'm sorry that you feel our forum is not meeting your needs, and I wish you the best of luck finding one that does. Fortunately, it does meet the needs of many, many people. When I was seeking an answer as to whether or not I should go forward with the Nissen surgery, this site offered me very straightforward, realistic information.

The support it provided allowed me to go forward--eyes open--with my surgery. I just wish I'd found it sooner, because I have had long term damage to my skin (bruising, tearing) due to extended and high dose inhaled steroid usage to try to control asthma that was made intolerable by GERD. Had I found it sooner, it might have provided a balance with the very negative and hysterical anti-Nissen posts around the internet.

We are not doctors here. We are people who have experienced GERD and some of the procedures associated with GI issues. Doctors can give us the medical aspects of this issue, but they do not generally have firsthand experience as members here do. We can offer each other experience and hope, which is invaluable.

I hope that lurkers out there can find the confidence to come on board and ask the questions you have on your mind. Yes, there are rules, but they are meant to keep our forum helpful and non-intrusive. If we're not answering your questions via a survey, Acidstorm, you can feel free to ask them in a different form. Members will do their best to help you.

I'm sorry you've been offended. You are still welcome to participate in this very supportive AND informational group.

Dear AcidStorm

I did not say you were posting a survey for any purpose other then your own info but perhaps the questions were keeping members from answering............if you read through the forums many of these questions have been addressed by the members over and over.  The members are your peers and not professionals so they are not qualified to give statements that are strictly medical advice.  They give personal, supportive information.

Support groups are a place for people to give and receive both emotional and practical support as well as to exchange information. People with health conditions, as well as their friends and families find support groups to be a valuable resource and get confirmation that their feelings are "normal", educate others, or just let off steam. IMHO joining a support group is joining a family.

I apologize if you misread my comment and I am sorry that we could not meet your needs here in one of the best forums on the internet for peer support.
