esophageal manometry

my questions

who had it, and how bad was it, please describe

could you breath ok?

how long was the thing inside you for

do you lay or sit?

is it worse or better than the plain endoscopy

how many times do you have to swallow?

I am going to get one soon. I had a endoscopy last July, unsedate because I didnt want twilight.

It did suck real bad, but I lived. Would I do it again? only if I had too. Is the manometry worse or better?

My endoscopy was done with sedation. For the manometry they squirt some lidocane in your nose and have you sniff that back until you taste it. Then she sprayed my throat to numb it. They had me sit reclined. Told me to take 10 small consecutive sips of water while she put the tube down. They tell you not to swallow until they say which is really hard. When it's time to swallow, they give you a sip, swallow once, and wait until the next one. They pull the tube up a little, give you another swallow, and wait. I don't remember how many times they have you swallow but I think it was around 10. Mine took a little longer because I kept swallowing when I wasn't supposed to. When they get the readings, she had me inhale really deep and she pulled the tube out. That's the only time I gagged and I gag at everything. You blow your nose to get the rest of the lidocane out and you're done. I think mine took a half hour tops. No breathing problems.

If you can do the EGD without sedation the manometry will be easy for you. The manometry tube is tiny compared to the EGD scope. I wouldn;'t even think of doing an EGD without sedation.

Manometry you will find is easy. Most of us over think how bad it will be and work ourselves into a frenzy!! After the tube they told me I was doing double swallows, I only felt one. Finally they had me suck the water out of a syringe and I did ok. Don't think about the tube and you will do fine. Shooz tongue tongue tongue

My breathing was fine once they got it in me. I wasn't informed what it involved, so I was pretty muched freaked out the whole time. If I had been more informed I probably would of done better.
I didn't like the feel of the tube in the back of my throat. Felt like a unswallowed noodle.

Why not a endoscpy with out sedation. LOL

ya it sucked, but right when they pull it out its over.

if you go through it, your gerd will get better (mentally), because then you will see what real gerd and horror is. lol j-k

yes, its horrible. i also had an upper and lower without sedation. not to scare you but this is worse in my opinion. i have to do it again with new dr, because the first doc did it when i was taking sedatives. he says they compromise the results. dont worry though its about 30 min., youll be glad when its over.

How was it horrible, if you were on sedatives?

they had the tube in you for 30 mins?

My upper, maybe 4mins the most.

and everyone is telling me here, that with the manomety, it will be in you for like 10min at most?

i had been on sedatives for years. after a while they dont help anxiety, sleep, etc. you take them to avoid withdrawal thats it. like i said its horrible and it takes about 30 min. just make sure you sit still, try and focus, and it will end. but everyone is different. my upper was also short. just hang in there and make sure youre aware of what they are doing. also, for those of us riddled with anxiety that makes it worse. clearly youve already been through a lot. i bet you do fine
