I am F, 58 years old, about
40 lbs overweight and have had GERD for at least 20 years.
My GERD symptoms include: heartburn, sore throat, cough, that thick feeling in the back of the throat that you can't seem to clear, acid when I bend over, episodes of those mini-thow up yummies in your mouth, some asthma like symptoms, and for the last year, nasal and sinus congestion.
My surgeon wants me to have lap. full Nissan Fundoplication. He assures me that it is very effective and has a 95+% success rate. He wants me back in 3 months for another endoscopy.
I am trying to be an informed patient. I am going to try to lose some weight. Need that no matter what I decide to do for the Gerd. I have had several endoscopy's that validate acide reflux. I am pre-Barrett's and have a small hiatal hernia that has, at times, caused me substantial pain.
I have good control on Omeprazole. But, do I take a PPI forever?!
I wonder about the long term control of the fundoplication. Does it actually last for the rest of your life? Does it come un-done and need repairs? Can it be repaired or redone?
I don't like the idea of not being able to throw up. What about excess gas, if you are not able to burp?
I have actually watched an online surgery. I think I have pretty carefully looked at the pro's and con's but would like to actually email or chat with some of you who have had this or other proceedures.
Thanks. Minnesota Grandma
