Hi All My Dear Friends at Healing Well!
Guess what? We're moved into our new home! I'm thinking you probably figured that already.
It's great here. I just had breakfast on our screened in porch, which was such a treat. No buggies bothering me! A friend gave me a great book entitled, "How to Retire, Happy, Wild and Free", and I'm enjoying reading it. That's just what I want to do--retire happy, wild and free! I know I'll enjoy the freedom to read for enjoyment, too. Teaching kept me so busy that I never made time for fun reading.
I started my first tutoring job yesterday and enjoyed that. I think that might be something I'd like to pursue in retirement. It keeps my hand in teaching and gives me a reason to do a little planning. I like that. I'm in the midst of organizing all my teaching things in the basement. I intended on tutoring, so saved a bunch of my things to make that more interesting.
We're enjoying taking a daily walk, although my poor deformed feet are taking it a little hard. I don't know if I've ever discussed my life-long foot problems, brought on by ballet (on toe at third grade) lessons that left me with bunions. At age 16 I had them removed by an (obviously) incompetent surgeon, who removed the big toe joints altogether (leaving me with big toes that didn't do their stabilizing job). This is a procedure (according to my wonderful podiatrist/foot surgeon) for 85 year olds who don't have much longer to use their feet. My podiatrist said that (if my surgeon were alive, and it was within the statute of limitations) I would have easily received a million dollars were I to sue.
As a result of my botched bunion surgery, my other toes have gone in all directions as they try to do the job the big toe is supposed to do. I've suffered with hurting feet my whole life, and had surgery in '07 and '08 to straighten hammertoes. I have a spot on my metatarsal where the bone hits the ground, which really hurts when I walk a lot. I think I'll have to depend on cross-training to get my exercise. I love to walk, though, so I don't want to give that up. I'll figure something out.
All in all, I'm happy to be retired and moved into our new home. It was extremely intense the last few weeks, packing, doing paper work, etc. It was exhausting, and I'm only now beginning to feel rested up from it.
I hope all of you are doing well and have a wonderful 4th of July weekend!
Take care,
Denise
