Hi. I'm 17 and I'm trying to get in the military. Unfortunately having GERD is disqualifying me and I might be able to get a waiver if I'm not taking medication for it. I went to the doctor to talk about surgical options and he had me take a PH test. He called yesterday with the results and he said I have the worst reflux he has seen with 26% reflux ( no Idea what that means) and am at high risk for esophogitis. I find this strange considering I only take OTC medication for it and it works most of the time. Do any of you know anything about this?

You're LES must be weak. Sometimes you can have silent gerd. No pain or very little pain, but lot's of acid.

Hmm. So can I have silent gerd as well as the painful type?

You need to be checked out throughly. Barium swallow, EGD, manometry, and ph test.

They can find out exactly how bad and how to fix it.
Since I had my surgery I don't have Gerd any more. I don't know if having the surgery will prevent you from getting into the millitary.

My brother's in the NG and has lost part of his hearing from riding in Hummers on patrol in Iraq. They don't use mufflers over there. He now runs a battalion (sp?) in South GA.

As I understand it the surgery is only disqualifying for 6 months. Did you have the Nissen fundoplication one? Ive heard alot of bad things about that. Do you have any side affects?

I had a 270 degree wrap. I have no side effects.
As long as you have no swallowing problems they'll probably do the full nissen.
You just have to chew extra good and avoid steak and bread for awhile.

Thats interesting. My doctor said after that you cant throw up or swallow well. is that true for you?

If it's too tight then you have swallow problems. You just have to chew well before swallowing.
Yes, you can't throw up.
That's why you get to carry around anti-nausea meds all the time.
