stomach bug coming!

I have zofran and reglan for post surgery. They can take about a half hour to work though so I take them at the first sign of nausea. I keep some in my kitchen, bathroom, and purse and take whenever I need it. I don't think I would take a laxative. The best thing to do is to avoid contact with anyone that is sick and wash hands often. Some people are able to vomit after the surgery if needed but it's not something you want to do so I would just keep your meds handy.

I caught that nasty bug a couple of months ago. Ugh!

I took 25mg of phengan before the throwing up began and a laxative because I though it was something else coming on. Two seconds after taking both I was throwing up so much I couldn't keep the pills down. I do think my wrap slipped a little though.
The best bet is to ask your doctor for compazine suppositories or the kind that melts in your mouth.
Of my four family members three got sick with it. Maybe you'll be the lucky one? ;)

If vomiting is imminent the only thing that works is paregoric. It's generic, keeps for years. Most younger docs have never heard of it, but most pharmacies carry it. You DO need a script. I carry a tiny bottle in my purse for real emergencies. It tastes incredibly awful, but you'll do anything you have to to stop from vomiting.

I also successfully use Zofran for nausea, but none of the antinausea meds will work if you leave it too late.

You'll probably have to convince a doc about the paregoric. I just wish I had taken it earlier when I had the first vomiting episode that wrecked my wrap. Now I live with chest and stomach pain all day, every day. Part of my very good wrap ripped loose and is sitting above my diaphragm. My doc asked how did I know that was the cause, and I told him it was because I was vomiting blood. Then when things settled down I still had pain which hasn't gone away and recurrent bouts of nausea and can hardly eat anything.

I had my first stomach bug at a little less than one year post Nissen. It really crept up on me. While I felt terrible, I had no nausea at all. I was faint, and barely made it back to my car before vomiting. I always carry zofran with me, and took one immediately. When I got home, though, I switched to Compazine suppositories, that worked fantastically. It was a bad virus, and whenever I went a moment past 4 hours I was back at it.

It's a good thing that you're being proactive. When you're vomiting, it can be hard to keep an oral med down...that's when the suppositories are really helpful. Also, if you're ill, I recommend acetaminophen suppositories. I have trouble swallowing big pills, and find them a great alternative. You don't need a script, but you may want to shop around, because they're pretty expensive. (The last time I bought them, they were $17 for 12.

You're right to avoid putting the stress of vomiting on your wrap.

I retired from teaching in June. I taught second grade. Can you say GERMS? Yikes. It's really one of the reasons I retired fairly early. I was getting sick constantly. Two years ago my doc asked me how long until I retire...not a good place to work when you have asthma.

Hand-washing, is your friend. Also, don't rush back...the later you go back the closer it is to springtime, and fewer germs the better.

Joy went back very quickly, and she's a first grade teacher with asthma. She did fine. I'm sure she'll be on later in the day to comment.

I was planning on going back half days after two weeks, but my lungs were infected and fragile, and my doctors ended up keeping me out for 2 months, for the very reason you are concerned. By then I was able to go back full time without any problem at all, and did just fine. (It took me into April, which was good.)

You should definitely get anti nausea drugs and carry them with you. Wash those hands constantly. You can't be too careful.

Classrooms are filled with germs. There's no doubt about that.
Just be prepared, use handwashing (and if you can't, keep a hand sanitizer handy).
