Hello All, a fellow poster suggested I start a new post for things I will need in the house after I have my Nissen surgery at the end of the month. Like for a liquid diet? Ensure? (thanks Denise)

I would suggest broth and jello as well. Several kinds of juice would be good too. Watch out for things that may have given you gas in the past. It will do so with a vengeance after surgery. Cream soups and hot cereal for a full liquid diet is good to have on hand, as you may not feel like going out to the store just because you can advance your diet.

Hi drgrcr,
Be sure to have some liquid Motrin or Tylenol on hand for after the first couple days when you no longer need the narcotic pain med. Also as badreflux said, be sure to have Gas-X. You might like to sneak some Gas-X into your hospital surgery. In my experience, it took far too long to get through the red tape necessary to get it from the hospital.
Be insistent with your surgeon...ask for the elixir/liquid version of the pain meds. It just gives you peace of mind. Seriously, they put you on a liquid diet and then give you pills that are pretty darn big. You can always crush them, but really...why wouldn't you want to have liquid?
If you call your surgeon, you can get the diet he'll want you on, and prepare accordingly. I had squash in addition to the things listed here. Egg custard is also a favorite of mine. I bought Carnation Instant Breakfast, but never even had any of it. My surgeon had me on solid foods that could be chewed to a liquid by Day 5, so many of the foods I'd prepared and frozen never got used. (Mashed potato and gravy was another tasty treat.)
Good luck with your surgery! I'm sure you'll do just fine.
Denise
