GERD can be intermittent. I took medication and cut out alot of what I was told to (wine, smoking, caffine, chocolate, acidic fruits, tomatoes, soda) but I do not think I did enough at all. I stil indulged in fried foods and sugars. And I had beer still (thinking it was better than hard liquior which is not the case). I think that maybe if I did more, I may be at a different place than I am now. I started about 3 months ago changing my diet dramatically, am on a new medicine and have a new GI doctor. I think if you are just starting out, do everything right. Although my endoscopy results still show mild issues, and I don't think I have done permenent damage, I probably should have dealt with this the right way years ago. For some this may be a life long condition, others may have issues periodically while some people may recover with no issues.
