Coffee after nissen. How long?

For those of you who drink coffee, how long did you wait after surgery to start drinking coffee again?

Never had the surgery, but I would probably wait a long time before drinking coffee. Im sure someone who knows a lot more about it will be along to respond soon.

I know this has nothing to do with what you asked, but are you a Bulldawg fan? I graduated from UGA in 05.

I was served coffee the very next morning after surgery in the hospital. I asked the nurse to check and double check w/my Doc and it was ok. With my GERD I didn't have "trigger foods" because everything and I mean everything gave me reflux and all the other symptoms of GERD. I had the ESOPHYX TIF 6/30 and I am in the recovery process. So far so good.

Yep, pretty much straight away. If you're a heavy coffee drinker consider cutting back a bit but you should be good to go straight away. All in moderation.

Hi Tduga1,

Everyone is different in their ability to tolerate coffee. I had the surgery in 2009, and have a very reactive stomach. I hadn't had much coffee for years, because it really bothered me. I'd switched to mostly tea, which is weaker and just doesn't bother me.

After surgery I was planning on taking up my coffee habit again, but it still bothers my stomach if I drink much of it. My stomach is very picky, and the surgery hasn't changed that. The reflux is gone, but my grouchy stomach still complains if I am not careful.

I do drink coffee, but not in any quantity. I try to save my coffee for places where it is truly good. I have it with dessert, or if I'm at a restaurant that has wonderful coffee.

Hope you'll be drinking it with abandon once your healing is well on its way. You'll know if it bothers you quite soon after you resume your coffee drinking habit. Hopefully you'll do just fine with it!

Thanks for the opinions. I didn't have any particular "trigger" foods either as everything I ate came up. Coffee never bothered my stomach so I might give it a try again soon.

I don't drink it that often, but I do love frappies from Starbucks.

Very nice Joy. I, too, was an education major and now teach economics to high school seniors. I have 4 weeks until I go back to work which will give me plenty of time to recover.

I had a small cup of coffee this morning with no problems.

Elementary teacher here. I teach first graders in a small rural school. We start back in four weeks too.
Four weeks will give you plenty of time to heal. I did mine over Christmas break two years ago.

Glad you could drink the coffee with no trouble.

I stirred 2 tablespoons strong brewed coffee into my vanilla pudding on Thursday (day 3) after Surgery on Monday June 27th.
Now currently eating small (2-3 oz) portions of sauteed white meat chicken, canned tuna mixed with mayo and lemon juice, and some tiny bits of cooked crispy bacon (I chew and chew until whatever I am chewing is a mush..if it isn't mush, I spit it out after extracting the flavor. Today is day 12.
Had the Nissen Fundoplication.
