Bill (opnwhl4) Looking for Info on Recovery from Open Nissens

Hi All,

I am looking for info on open Nissens vs. laps. Since I've had 2 laps done, I know all about them, but I am wondering how long the recovery time is for an open. I'm interested in things like weight and activity restrictions.

I want to have it done the 1st week of Sept. and hope to be able to take my daughter out Oct. 1st for archery season I normally shoot 67lbs and use tree stands. i can set my sons bow up for me its only 50 to 60 lbs.--or am I just wishing in an empty well.

Also would like to know if anyone could give an estimate on how long the hospital stay is?. I stayed 3 days with both laps and since then, I have been in the hospital for 3 weeks, 4 days,4 days, and then 2 weeks recently and all since feb. 28th, so obviously I'd like to keep it to a minimum.

Thank you for the info. drawing a bow uses mostly upper back and shoulder muscles. if nothing else ill take my daughter and video her hunt.
I can handle 5 days in the hospital. its those 2 week ones i hate.
Yes the diet after this surgery is a doctors preference. it varies alot

I do not know what the down time is for the open but I pray for you that it will be at a minimum.. I also hope that you won't have to go through the left side, this would just stink for you... I cannot comprehend how you manage to stay so positive when you have something shooting you in the foot every other day..
If anyone in the whole world deserves some Sunshine and Rainbow days my friend, it is you.... Your love of family and your supportive and caring nature will be the road to healing for you!! I say this because I know that all of the people you have and will support now and in the future are going to send that love and support and caring to you ten fold and you deserve every bit of it!!!!!!! Healing begins with self preservation.. you have the most contagious attitude I have ever encountered.. I am sure that there are times that you do not feel nearly as well as you come across, but you never let on...
IT IS YOUR TIME!!!!! you will get through this and you will be able to do whatever you need to do with your family... Just please be careful and stay with us, cause we need you here.. You are IMPORTANT to all of us!!!!

I hope you get all your questions answered when you have your appt on the 22nd. I can understand why you are so anxious. It does sound scary but I commend you of your positive attitude. Even while you are sick & suffering you still manage to provide comfort & encouragement to everyone here.

I'd like to share a little story with you & I hope you will take it with the comfort it is intended & not cause you any more anxiety.

In 1965, my father at the age of 38, had a Nissen fundoplication to repair a very large hiatus hernia. In those days it was a very new procedure & the surgeon he had here in NZ had only ever done the operation 5 times. An incision was made to gain entry through his back & he has a very large scar running from the top of his right shoulder down to his waist which is now nothing more than a fine white line. The surgeon also removed 3 ribs to get access to the hernia. Dad was in hospital for 7 days & I remember being allowed to take the day off school when we went to pick him up from hospital. He also insisted on driving the car home as well. My dad will turn 84 next month & acts like a 60 year old.
He eats whatever he wants when he wants, is still reasonably active & says the operation changed his life. I am so grateful to still have him in my life.

What I'm trying to say is that although it is daunting to think about having to face surgery for a third time you need to accept that whatever way your surgeon chooses to approach your operation it is the best possible option to fix your problems so that you too can go on to lead a happy, healthy rest of your life doing all the things you enjoy with your family.

My daughter is 16 now and plays travel softball. she has already had a few full ride scholarships and she is just a junior now. she is a huge 5 ft 3inches but is vicious in the field and has homerun power. really ssurprises teams who havent seen us play. she started shooting when she was 4 and if she would put the time and effort into archery as she does sooftball she could win a lot of 3d and target shoots. she is a natural at it. has had about perfect form from day 1. infact i hate shooting before at 3d because she has a habit of robinhooding my arrows and theyaint cheap.lol! i also hate iit when she shooots fom the mems stake at 3d and beats me. u could say she and i r very competative with each other.my wife and son also shoot and hunt" well my wife had to stop because of a left shoulder issue. until my daughter turned 8 we shot 3d every weekend indoor and out. miss those days in the woods but she has decided to use softball to get into college.

Hello everybody,

I have a 13 year old daughter who unfortunately had LPR. :(

I am trying to gather some data about Nissen and other surgery options in kids which can help this issue.
It pains my heart to see she cannot eat anything...and also worried she will damage her lungs etc.

Also very depressed and looking for some support from other parents whose kids have these issues. Maybe we can talk about diet and other supplements and of course some moral support. Its hard for a mother tosee what she had to go through, some days are quite bad and when she had flare ups she cries.

I came upon one of the posts where they mentioned Bill has undergone lots of surgeries, so landed here with a search on the site hoping to talk to him and see what he says.

One more thing - she is not on PPIs (not able to take it because of side effects, so largely going by on supplements)
