trouble swallowing food anxiety

I've been having trouble swallowing food for 18 months, most daily when I eat a couple of times when i swallow food it sticks and I don't have any other symptoms apart from this. I have had camera down throat and barium swallow. When i had the camera down throat the specialist told me its probably swelling i have near the tonsil area and it will go away in years but i remember swallowing very hot tea with tablets a few days before which burnt my throat.

I went to two doctors afterwards and one doctor told me it was probably muscle spasms and the other said anxiety because i do have a fear of choking. I just wondered what you think.

Hi Superville,

Sometimes with GERD, people get strictures in their esophagus and they can be dilated. However, if you had an endoscopy, it would have been discovered.

Your doc who saw the swelling is probably on target, and your swallowing problem will resolve itself over time.

That said, people who experiencing swallowing issues often develop the anxiety you're describing. That creates its own swallowing problems.

You might try to go to the anxiety forum here on Healing Well and describe your problem. There might be others who have had a similar experience.
