Hello all,
A little history - I have been diagnosed with GERD and have had it for years. Originally I took prevacid but a few years ago I was switched to omeprazole (losec). The prevacid worked well however the change was due to the lower price of the omeprazole. But it has been working fine as well.
Two years ago, in October, I had a bad spell with my stomach. It was bloaty, gassy, and the doctor increased my omeprazole from 20 mg a day to 40 mg. It helped but I found that my issues with anxiety and stress kept bringing back the acidity. I worked with a psychologist for these problems and after a couple of months my stomach issues resolved and never came back. I am still on the 40 mg/day of omeprazole.
Now, another issue has come up and maybe you folks can help me out. about 2-3 weeks ago the back of my throat started having a burning sensation and I seem to have some heartburn but only from the back of the throat to about 6-12 inches down my esophagus. My stomach area is fine, no heartburn gas, bloating.
Over the past couple of months I have had issues that have really skyrocketed my stress level and anxiety and I find it hard to relax. But I don't know why this isn't affecting my stomach (thank heavens) - just my throat area. This feeling also started after I got a new refill of omeprazole but from another generic drug manufacturer. I caled the pharmacy and they put me back on the pills produced from the drug company I was using (I don't know why they changed that one time).
I have been reading posts on LPR and also the post on the Koufman Low Acid Diet. I don't know if I have LPR but I am definitely going to follow this diet, as this should help my GERD in any case. I read some on LPR but I don't have many of its symptoms, like something in the back of my throat, hoarseness, etc... I just have that burning feeling, almost like a scratchy throat when you have a cold without the hoarseness.
What do you think? Should I try something like an over the counter antiacid like Tums or Oval 180 for the time being? With our wonderful medical system in Canada, I probably can't get to see my regular doctor for about 6 weeks. But I could see an after hours doctor at his office building any time. I might mention too that although I sleep with the head of my bed raised and I do not eat hours before going to bed, I still wake up with a mouthful of acid-like stuff, ugh (sorry to be gross).
Thanks so much and I apologize for the long post.
