Hi ,am new here , GERD ,so thats what its called .....the condition that makes me feel like im gonna die, glad im not alone with this problem...not that id wish it on my worst enemy either, i was diagnosed with a sliding hiatus hernia earlier this year, after suffering from the acid burning and vomiting in the middle of the night,while i was laying down ,wondering what the hell was going on.......I at least now know what im dealing with and hopefully with this site get it under control, any and all suggestions are welcomed......

Pretty sure i have found my new favorite site on the world wide web LOL

Hi there Callaghen, welcome to Healingwell. What action has been recommended for your hernia? Has your specialist discussed surgery with you and started you on medication?

Getting on top of GERD can take a lot of time and perseverence - you can read all about the recommended lifestyle and dietary changes here on Healingwell. A brief summary -

Stop smoking.
Don't drink or eat anything that you know triggers your GERD symptoms
Lose any excess weight.
Eat small meals several times a day.
Wear clothes that fit loosely.
Don't lie down for at least three hours after you eat.
Lift the head of your bed 6 inches to 8 inches higher than the foot of the bed.

Common foods people feel they need to avoid are spicey food, fatty food, coffee, tea, alcohol and tomatoes. GERD doesn't always follow the "rule book" though - what makes you feel terrible may be fine for someone else with GERD, and vice versa. You just have to experiment!

I'm sure our moderators will be along to welcome you too, and you'll no doubt hear from other members who have had a sliding hernia. If you'd like some specific comments regarding how people dealt with that, you might like to start a new thread entitled "anyone else had a sliding hernia" (or similar wording........).
