Do you have to stop PPI's for diagnostic tests??

Hey all,

Just curious if one would have to stop taking PPI's prior to having tests done such as a barium swallow, manometry, etc??

I was wondering how long meds would need to be stopped prior to testing b/c if one stopped taking them suddenly, there would be acid rebound, which would create erroneous test results as well as make you feel pretty bad.

Any input is appreciated

Your doctor will determine if you have to stop taking meds before a test. I've seen experiences here where doctors asked to stop taking the meds before. In my case, I was asked to stay on meds through the endoscopy, manometry and 24hr pH test to see how the PPIs were working. I had been on them for quite some time with no symptom relief. The tests basically revealed that the PPIs were doing their job, reducing acid, but due to LES problems, I was still having significant amounts of non-acidic reflux. This helped reached the decision for surgery.

Yes that's right - I get the impression it depends on the circumstances. They'll tell you what they want you to do

For Helicobacter biopsies they prefer it if you are off treatment, but if you are unable to stop they just take more biopsies and from different parts of the stomach (for example).

Can I ask you a question? I had the same situation - I took a ph impedence test while on PPI's as instructed by the dr., to see if they were working b/c I also had no change in symptoms (they were still there).

Mine also came back that they were doing there job, but the doctor didn't tell me "you have significant amounts of non-acid reflux". I did see on the results though, that my non-acid reflux was 'high'. It was like this:

acid reflux, 11 (normal 55)
weakly acid reflux, 21 (normal 20)
non-acid reflux, 8 (normal 1)
all reflux, 40 (normal 73)

Do you happen to remember your results? I would think my LES is working if my total reflux events were almost only half of what was designated as normal...but I did have 8 non-acid reflux events (compared to the norm of only 1)...

I've been confused about this over a while and saw your post and thought you may have experience.
