Going To See Jamie Koufman Tomorrow

Hey All,

I'm going to see Jamie Koufman tomorrow and was wondering if anyone has been to her and if so, what is usually done at an initial consultation?

I have heard so much about her from this forum and through other research as well. Has she helped any of you?

Thanks again for your support. So I just came back from my visit and I have to say that she is absolutely awesome. She scoped my throat and sees very mild vocal cord pareisis,normal vocal cords for the most part, and pretty significant reflux despite being on two prevacids which is pretty depressing. She also prescribed me tetracycline (just had a URI).

On a positive note, she told me that there is a solution to LPR and explained her frustration with sending patients to all different doctors who do nothing but suggest conflicting ideas. I then told her that I am saddened by this condition because there is no cure and she looked at me and said "Who said? of course there is, 2/3 of my patients graduate. I want to get you to a place where you no longer need to be running to doctors and so you can live a normal healthy life." At that point, I burst into tears because in all this time, she is the first Doctor to give me hope. She also said she forbids me to do any of my own research on LPR, because she informed me that 90 percent of what I am reading is extremely misleading. After she scoped me, she held my throat with both of her hands just around my UES and told me to swallow. When I was done, she said good but I'm not exactly sure why she did this.

She's very authoritative but she's also a wonderful and caring doctor and I am happy to be in her care. I am scheduled to do the manometry and 24 hr double-probe ph test on 3/1 and 3/2 (which I am extremely freaked out about) but I know I need to do it. If any of you are in the NYC area, I absolutely recommend scheduling a visit with her ASAP! It's so nice to know that with all the conflicting information out there, you can get the best possible care for this horrific condition.

Faith - Good to hear that your appointment with Dr Koufman went well. What reflux/nerve drugs has she prescribed for you?

Glad to read you were pleased with your visit to the Dr. and that you have been given new hope.  Do keep us posted and remember by March 3rd your tests will be history.
