Weight Gain Anyone?

I've been on NEXIUM for about two months. I've never had any weight issues ever since I had my baby. In these two months I've gained a total of 15 pounds. I'm actually eating less just because I really have to watch my food intake. I'm exercising more than before. Spinning classes 3 times a week and a 3 mile jog 2 days a week. Every week that I weight myself I put on at least 1 extra pound. It never came to my mind until today that all these extra pounds could've been caused by taking 1 NEXIUM 40mg pill every day. I stopped taking them today. Hopefully I'll see my body back soon. I am just going to be way more carefully my diet.

I am on Prilosec and Omeprazole, I have lost 16 pounds and counting. My diet has changed dramatically and walking everyday. I eat very small healthy meals.

I started taking Nexium about 7 months ago due to an ulcer I got after taking medication for my Lupus. I've never been sick until the Lupus 2 years ago. I have 3 kids, I'm 42 and have always been on the slender side. During the past 5 months, I've been gaining weight every week. I eat fair and I exercise at least 3 days a week. I just keep gaining and gaining. My ulcer is better and my docter told me about 2 months ago I could stop the Nexium, but it really helped with the heart burn, so I kept taking it. I am going to stop the Nexium and go back to Roleaids. I've also been retaining alot of water. I'm wondering if that also may be the Nexium. We'll see.

I am on Omeprazole and have not had this problem. I have been on it for several years now.

I used to be a very skinny guy. In fact, I used to have a very hard time gaining weight. As a much younger man I was very self-conscious of being too scrawny. I've now been on Prevacid for about 15 years. During that time I gained a tremendous amount of fat. A little over a year ago my Prevacid dosage was cut in half and I've lost about 10-12 pounds since then.

I watch my diet very closely and even go to the gym several times a week but I have a very hard time dropping any more weight.

I don't think there's any question about it....Prevacid does cause weight gain. There is a direct correlation between this drug and packing on the pounds. I'm now looking into having a procedure to put an end to this drug forever. I'm checking into either a fundoplication, esophyx tif, or maybe the stretta procedure.

I am so glad I found these postings because every official side effects site seems to say the opposite - that PPIs and weight gain are not connected. I have been on protonix for almost two years to treat what my GI said is GERD caused by an enlarged sphincter that causes acid to travel up my esopheogus! Needless to say as I am sure all of you know this has always caused me much discomfort but on the protonix my acid problems went away. However, over the last few months acid reflux has started becoming a problem again, even on the daily regimen of protonix, and not to mention I have had really bad issues with stomach bloating and excessive fullness after only eating small amounts of food. My weight has crept up to a total of about 8lbs ever since I went on the PPI. Two weeks ago I experienced really bad nausea and vomiting and thought maybe h.pyolori, gastroparesis but never thought that it could be a problem with the protonix. I decided that if fit wasn't helping anymore it was useless to take it and have been off of protonix for about a week and have supplemented this with supplement digestive enzymes which seems to have helped a lot so far with the discomfort (nausea, bloating) associated with eating. And have even found that my acid reflux has minimized as well and suspect that my recently gained weight will also come off over the next few months (already dropped 2 of the 8). These pounds have been resistent to even the most extreme of diets (dukan and atkins) and excercise (3-5 times a week).

Sorry for the long rant but am really glad to have found this forum and hear others talk of similar experiences to my own. Through my research I have found that acid production in our stomachs are essential for us to process and properly digest the food we eat. What these PPIs do is reduce acid production to around 10% of normal functioning - does this seem right to you? After reading that many GERD sufferers had also turned to digestive enzymes I decided to give them ago because really what we need to help relieve our symptoms is for our stomach and intestinal tracts to digest food the right way - by breaking the food down and absorbing nutrients while also excreting the waste. I need and want my body to produce acid and am happy to be off these pills - I just hope to find a permanent way to keep them where they should be rather than in my throat!

Hello. I previously posted the very same concerns for my wife. I was given a lot of responses saying to take digestive enzymes. I contacted my Chinese herbist and he confirmed that nexium can damage a person's micro flora. He agreed that digestive enzymes could help. My wife is now pregnant so we haven't tried it yet. If any of you do could u please let us know your results

Hello. I have posted this on a separate post, please forgive me if u have already read it. My wife was also on nexium 7 or so years ago and gained 80 pounds in approx 4 months. Since coming off she has battled the weight with little to no success. Many people on this sight have told us to take digestive enzymes because nexium can damage the micro flora in the body. This can cause the body to be unable to properly break down food. This fools your body into believing it is starving and starts it store as much as possible, especially around the waist. This was confirmed possible by my Chinese herbist. Unfortunately my wife is pregnant so we are cautious about trying something new. We are trying to find pregnancy safe digestive enzymes.
So if anyone try's digestive enzymes please let me know if it helps.
