Both can be, and seem to commonly be done at the same time. In my case, the hernia ended up being so tiny when the surgeon got in there that it did not require repair.

My surgery lasted 2 hours and 9 minutes. (funny how accurate of a time the surgeon gave me). Sounds like many take 90 minutes. Mine involved students observing, so perhaps that made it last longer.

My husband remembers about an hour and a half.  The surgeon gave a three hour estimate.

My surgery , on 02/07, was an hour and 15 minutes. I was told to expect between one and two hours.
