fever 101, surgery scheduled for 2-29

Went to surgeon today for last minute questions- had 99.0 there. Now feel a lot of nasal congestion, slight sore throat and evening temperature is running 101.1 (without any Tylenol or ibuprofen). Surgery is scheduled for 2-29 (today is 2-23). Do you think they will go ahead and reschedule or give me a few days to see what develops? Was really getting mentally prepared for this hiatal hernia repair and probably a 3/4 wrap.

I had bronchtitis three weeks before my surgery. Call your doctor and be sure it's safe.

I agree with Joy, check with your Dr on Monday.  He will want to know if your temperature has returned to within normal range for at least 24 hours off of antipyretics.  If you have upper respiratory infection generally the Dr. does not proceed with surgery so do talk with your Dr.

Hi mintpepper,

I agree that you should check with your surgeon.  While I don't think my temperature was elevated, I had my surgery go forward while I was suffering from a lung infection and severe cough.  Since my lungs were being affected by reflux, they really couldn't wait for them to improve.

Like you, I was very fearful that they'd want to reschedule, but surprisingly, they didn't.  Just be open with your surgeon and let him make the decision.

Thanks for the replies. I went to pre-op today and it looks like surgery for 2-29 is still on!! Chest x-ray was clear and white cell count not elevated, so I guess I'll just have to survive the cough I have. Temp has still been running 99-100 but it was normal (of course) when I went for pre-op testing. I take Singulair but they told me to use my inhaler several times today and tomorrow and again morning of surgery. Will try to post again after surgery - we'll see how the toupet fundoplication goes.

Hi mintpepper,

Good luck with your surgery!  I have asthma, and my doc had me do a nebulizer treatment before surgery.  If they have asthma concerns, they can also give you medication with the anesthesia. 

We'll be waiting to hear from you when the deed is done!

Meant to post yesterday- they decided to wait one week for the surgery. Now it is scheduled for Mar. 7th and hopefully they will do it then. I am still coughing a lot but it should be better by then.

It's probably a good idea to wait if it will give your lungs a chance to heal and you're feeling better.  March 7th is not all that long to wait.

Just got home today from Mar.7th surgery. Had a few problems with blood oxygen levels.They did a cat scan to check for blood clots- passed that test ok so they sent me home with liquid meds for the most part, and I have a g-tube in stomach which I can use to let off excess gas if necessary.Am too tired to post more today - I have only had 3/4 cup beef broth and a small container of juice today!! Dr said most of my stomach was up in the chest (larger than he thought).

Welcome to the yeah yeah   yeah Wrapped Club! yeah yeah yeah I'm so glad to hear that you're on the other side and safely home so you can start healing and feeling better.  It sounds as if you've been through a lot, so be sure to get lots of R&R.  Glad you posted so we know you're okay!
