I cannot speak to the breathing problems as I did not experience it but I may be able to help a little with the liquid diet you are on. I too was on liquids only for almost 3 weeks. I learned that anything you can want can be put in a blender. I loved the beef vegetable soup. It tastes so good when you have been drinking broths and cream soups that are strained.. just add a little broth or water when blending it. frappe it and you will have a thicker nourishing broth. It will stick to your ribs a bit better than regular broth.
Actually most food that you would like to have can be blended with a bit of broth and liquified. You do not have to suffer if you have a blender...I wouldn't try to blend any kind of plain meat but simple stew like chicken stew can be done. Just be sure that it is liquid, not chunks or solids.
My first soft foods were baked/broiled fish, chicken(thighs cook moister and chews to a liquid) & dumplings (fluffy not noodle) with lots of broth. Make sure what ever you eat you start with one thing at a time so you can eliminate problem foods for an extra week or 2. Go slow with your introduction of new food, and you will be fine.
