Hi There!
I was diagnosed with GERD about a month ago after having an endoscopy that was done with just sedation (versed/benadyl.) I ended up having a nissen wrap to stop the acid reflux from coming up (it was causing severe asthma) and the surgery seemed to work. Lately though, I've had chronic pain in the location of my surgery and have to go in for another endoscopy. They attempted this two days ago but were unable to get me to relax with sedation. I now have to have the procedure done under general anesthesia.

Has anyone here ever had this procedure done under GA before, and if so, are you intubated for this? If you are, how do they do the endoscopy?

any insight would be appreciated.

I had propofol which is a general anesthesia. They gave me an IV injection and the first drug was something to relax me. I was still awake. All I remember next is the nurse telling me to "roll over onto my left side". I don't remember anything after that except waking up in recovery. I was not intubated for it, everything was through IV. They did the encoscopy after I was under.

thanks Lilred I heard that they may also use something called an endoscopy mask--i'm just unsure how they ventilate you if you're not intubated.

I have to be in general anasthesia too. The other Meds don't work for me. No incubations. They do try to put the bite block in b4 you go under and then you are out. What do they think went wrong with your wrap?

Hi

I had my second one under GA as I had failed sedation with the first one (couldn't move or speak but was in a lot of pain.......). The GA was great. I was still very lucid after the initial drug to relax me and they explained at great length I might feel someone pressing on my throat to prevent reflux as I went under - but I never felt a thing until I was waking up afterwards. Had a sore throat and trouble swallowing for the first couple of hours afterwards but basically it was a breeze compared with the "conscious sedation" method!

You can ask for "heavy sedation" (here in the UK) where they use more of the Midazolam but my consultant didn't want to risk it after my stress from the first endoscopy. If it was something I had to have done yearly I might well give higher dose Midazolam/heavy sedation a chance, but otherwise I'll stick to GA!

They tried the versa drug on me, but I fought the doctor, so they gave me propenal (sp?) through IV sedation.

I was out like a light and woke up very clear headed. Couldn't remember either procedure. :)

Little bit of a sore throat, but fine otherwise.

Ian now a little surprised as I have had 2 gastroscopies and my doctor wouldn't give me anything other than local spray/mild sedation. It was awful as I couldn't stop being sick and on several occasions he was asking me if I could stop heaving as he was having trouble seeing properly. I was told a general was only undertaken in the most dire of situations such as it being an emergency admission due to breathing issues. Nett result is my throat was very sore and I had a cut where my tonsils are.

If I ever need another I will bear the above in mind thanks for the postings.
