Sore throat gone, spasms back

Well, the sore throat went away, but esophageal spasm (lower esophageal) is back. The chest one and lump in throat one are not back...thank god. I have not done one thing differently. The only thing I can think of is stress, we just got 2 kittens and my private practice is growing so I am working a lot. I'm back to looking for answers, ordered papaya enzymes and l-glutamine as I read they may help. Still another 3 weeks on this ppi until I see my dr. I get so discouraged with this. I feel ok for a few days then boom, pain again. Boo to GERD.

Erica, I am so sorry to read that you are having esophageal spasms again and I know that the symptoms of GERD can be abject misery.  How I wish I had a great answer for all of the members here in the forum that suffer from continous ongoing pain.  The more I read I see how each person's symptoms are different but the pain is the one that causes the most distress for so many. I truly feel that stress plays a huge role in how are bodies respond to our medical problems.  Keeping stress under control is not easy when we do not always have control over what is going on in our live but remember to put your health first.  One of the best remedies for anxiety is to talk about it.  Here is where good friend, family and members of this forum come in.  The old adage, " A problem share is a problem halved" is so true in my opinion so keep on talking with us here in the forum .  We care. Thanks, I'm a therapist so I do understand the role of stress and am trying to use all my stress relieving techniques. I am just really discouraged because I was doing better. I thought I had gotten things under control almost and then things just changed. I'll see my new doctor June 15. I'm sure I'll just get another PPI. I am going to see if I can get that mamertry test. I think I'm grasping at straws and I need to figure out the root of the reflux.

I'm right there with you. Not sure what happened, I was doing so good and then bam....here we go again. I'm not gonna bother call the dr., I don't need more ppi's. Hang in there.

My husband is trying to make me feel better saying that it is progress that I went some time without them. He may be right, I guess I was just hoping it was for good. I feel bad for him. We are newly married and I've been a mess fir months now. I've struggled for years but it was never this bad. I guess I'll just have to wait and see if things change. Stay on the diet and natural stuff and the useless PPI.

I said this before it's not a race, it's a marathon! It will be a long hard fight with as many victories as set backs, so stay strong put your fist up and come out swinging! It sounds like you've married a good man, even though this illness is a curse it may be a blessing that adds to you and your husbands bond to make it all the stronger. My wife has been my rock and everthing else, but I not only come here to share, give and receive help, I come here to give her break.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'm just sick of it. In the next few years we plan to have children which I heard pregnancy can make reflux worse ( I can't imagine that right now) maybe I'll have it better controlled by then. It's only been 3 months of a rigid diet. I didn't watch my diet enough before that. I should have. But the dr I had minimized it and I thought id be fine until this bad flare up. I'm feeling a little better now, hopeful I'm going for more good times.

Hi Erica, my suggestion is to not be afraid to try different approaches from what your doctor recommends if his/her advice is not working. I believe that many of them consider ppis to be the answer for everyone because they do work better than most other approaches for most people. I am very happy that I switched to an h2 blocker zantec and got off the ppi. I am still very careful with my diet but include occasional indulgences (can you say ice cream?)

I would prefer to be on an H2 blocker but I'm afraid that since the high dose PPI isn't completely working that the h2 blocker wouldn't be strong enough. I'll see what dr says. Do the PPI didn't work for you either?

The ppis (prilosec then nexium) did not work magic for me though I think they enabled some healing. I briefly took 80 Mg nexium, but it didn't seem to help, and I went back down to 40 Mg, for a total of 9 months. The the rebound off the ppi was much worse than I had hoped since i had carefully tapered off, but now I feel better than before in spite of some stress increases (pressure at work and death of a close relative). I had those spasms again during my rebound phase, they are awful.

Thanks, that's the worst symptom is these spasms. It's good to hear that for u they stopped. I'm so on the fence with ppi drugs. I had hoped 8 weeks on a high dose would promote healing and the spasms would then stop and I could taper off and get on an H2 blocker. My 8 weeks is up June 15. Not looking good. I'm on a stricter diet than koufman and still this persists. I can't believe there is even stomach acid left after the double dose of zegrid. Unless I'm refluxing something else or still producing a lot of acid.

I decided to go back on my old medication (protonix) which my new doctor changed because I had told him a lot of the PPIs gave me abdominal pain and he wanted me on a high PPI dose for 8 weeks. I don't see my doctor for 2 more weeks and I just could not stay in that much pain. I also had been on protonix for 6 years and had some left over. I took 40 mg this morning and I feel a lot better. I think the medication was the culprit. Probably not strong enough for my situation right now. The Zegrid was OTC . So most likely I will be on this for 8 weeks or my new dr, will change me to another medication, I guess it depends how I feel. But I can live till then now. I know I am not a doctor but I have read enough and had to take my situation into my own hands. Luckily I had some still. I will report back.
