Does anyone know if there's a real consensus on this issue? In my experience, GI doctors I've talked to say that having too little acid is not a problem. However, more than one alternative healthcare provider has suggested that too little acid can cause reflux because the LES doesn't contract enough without acid present, and I've had a nutritionist lecture me at length about the importance of acid in the entire digestive process as a precursor to various other digestive enzymes.
The importance of acid makes sense to me. The idea that too little acid can cause reflux doesn't seem logical.
